This position is assigned to the Building Maintenance Group of Engineering Service. The Carpenter Helper serves primarily as a carpenter helper, throughout the facility as assigned. Facilities include inpatient care, outpatient care, nursing home care and various administrative support buildings that range from 1 to 65 years old.
Duties
Major duties include:
- Operate power tools such as circular saws, table saws, panel saws, band saws, battery operated drills, impact drills, glue guns, power nailers, sanders and various other non-power hand tools relating to the carpenter trades such as hammers, planes, screw drivers, and hand saws.
- Performs such duties as replacing ceiling tiles and associated grid, replacing floor tiles, replacing carpet squares, installing vinyl cove base, installing various types of wall covering and wall guards.
- Required to clean work areas and project sites, along with all areas of the carpenter shop.
- Will assist gathering and delivering to the project tools and materials as the carpenters require.
- Setting up and tearing down scaffolding or work platforms as required and any other labor support as needed.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Physical Requirements: Work is performed in wood shops and at job sites. When working in a shop employee stands for extended periods of time while operating machinery. The work requires considerable bending kneeling and stooping. Incumbent exerts very heavy physical effort in doing such task as frequent lifting and moving objects weighting over 50 pounds, moving and stacking material, and pushing material carts. Some work performed in shop areas where the employee is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes and other hazards associated with woodworking. The employee is subjected to cuts, bruises and contusions. The employee may be exposed to hazards of working around ladders and scaffolds. The employee uses protective clothing and devices.
A. Utilize proper body mechanics when lifting heavy or bulky items.
B. Wear appropriate clothing, shoes and personnel protection equipment (PPE) for the particular type of work performed.
C. Utilize all PPE as specified and/or directed by management.
D. Comply with all safety codes, guidelines, requirements or mandates.
Incumbent is exposed to hazards of tripping, falling, shock, burns, dust, fluids, chemicals, and disease. Incumbent must be able to climb, crawl, walk, stoop, and sit for prolonged periods
