This position is located in the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR)/Quality of Life (QOL) Department in Navy Region, Southwest. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a working leader while performing a full range of lifeguard and water safety instruction functions.
Duties
Responsible for providing work direction to Recreation Aids (Lifeguard) and Recreation Assistants (Water Safety Instructors), passing on instructions received from supervisor and setting the pace in accomplishment of duties related to lifeguard and water safety programs.
Assist with establishing work schedules. Checks work in progress and when finished for compliance with sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines. Answers working questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions and directives. Keeps supervisor informed on status and progress of work; causes of delays; overall work operations and problems that require corrective action.
Assist with evaluation of participants' progress and informs participant, parent and/or guardian of progress, appropriateness of placement, essential physical conditioning that is required, and areas in which improvement is needed. Recommends appropriate actions to assist participants in their achievement and/or advancement.
Assists Aquatics Director and/or Assistant Aquatics Director with special events.
Responsible for serving as a lifeguard by monitoring activities in and around the pool area to ensure the safety and prevent accidents of all participants.
Ensures that all water safety rules are observed by swimmers. Caution customers regarding unsafe areas and practices. Informs and educates swimmers/customers concerning common aquatic risks.
Responsible for taking charge in an emergency situation; performs rescues according to established operating procedures as outlined in Lifeguard Manual and Bureau of Naval Personnel Instruction; and renders emergency first aid, CPR and artificial respiration as required. Ensures and complies with the appropriate Emergency Action Plan procedures for minor/major chemical spills, fire, medical, etc.
Responsible for completing all required accident reports and notification of incident to a supervisor in a timely manner.
Ensures and performs consistent and timely water quality checks; identifies failing water quality and promptly reports deficiencies to a supervisor for appropriate action. Logs water quality results, notes unusual findings, chemical additions, etc.
Responsible for ensuring that all equipment used in aquatic activities and programs are in proper working order prior to and after use. Ensure Public Works personnel performs pump room/pool facility maintenance as requested; initiates work orders and certifies completion of work on work/job orders. Ensure compliance to inspection procedures. Reports any defective equipment to a supervisor for immediate action.
May be required to open and/or close a swimming pool facility. Ensures compliance with established opening or closing procedures. Maintain security of facility and property at all times.
Provides information to customers about programs, upcoming events, department policies and procedures, fees, etc.
Responsible for performing housekeeping tasks to ensure proper standards of appearance, cleanliness and safety of pool surrounding areas in accordance with an established schedule. All areas (locker rooms, restrooms, etc.) must be in compliance with sanitation rules and regulations.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
- Must meet federal suitability requirements including successful completion of background investigation.
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, without a fixed schedule. When outdoors sun and eye irritation exposure may occur.
- Irregular working hours may be required to include early shift, late shift, evenings, weekends and holidays when the need arises.
- Level 1: Must obtain the following certification within 30 days of hire: Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional and Standard First Aid by the American Red Cross or equivalent.
- Wearing of protective clothing and equipment may be required as situations warrant.
- May be required to lift and carry swimmers varying in weight and size.
- Must be ready to respond to emergency situations at all times.
Qualifications
At least two (2) years of experience as Lifeguard.
Must be at least 18 years of age and have performed lifeguard functions.
Must possess a current and valid WSI/lifeguard training, first aid, and CPR certifications.
Knowledge and ability to perform rescues and render emergency aid.
Knowledge of water safety, emergency response, self-survival, and life support, rules and regulations.
Knowledge and ability to perform water quality checks.
Knowledge of standard fire, safety, sanitation and hazardous material rules, regulations and procedures.
Ability to prepare and maintain reports and records.
Ability to enforce rules and regulations of an aquatics facility.
Must complete with favorable results, background checks.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively with others.
Ability to lead.
