This position is located in the Audiology and Speech Pathology Service. The Staff Speech-Language Pathologist performs functions associated with contemporary speech-language pathology practice. Functions at the full performance level; duties are carried out throughout the medical center including clinical and patient care areas.
Duties

Major Duties:
Apply a wide range of theories, principles, and methodologies in the practice of speech-language pathology.
Develop coherent treatment strategies.
Incorporate new clinical procedures sufficient to perform clinical services.
Conduct assessments, provides treatment interventions, and provides consultation to other health care professionals.
Exercise independent clinical judgment.
Adapts clinical procedures and techniques to accommodate age-specific and unique patient conditions, needs, and expectations.
Consult with physicians and other health care practitioners related to diagnostic evaluation and treatment.
Participates with other health care practitioners to address the global needs of the patient, advises on diagnosis and treatment.
Document evaluations, diagnosis and clinical opinion, treatment plans, outcomes of treatment, and changes in functional status.
Provide patient/family education.
Provide S-LP instrumentation.
Conduct principles and techniques used in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia, and cognitive communication disorders.
Conduct principles and techniques used in voice disorders including alaryngeal and trach/ventilator-dependent patients to perform functions associated with contemporary speech-language pathology scope of practice.
Attend interdisciplinary team meetings.
Additional duties or tasks may be assigned by leadership to ensure efficient daily operations.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
U.S. Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States.
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Education: For speech pathologist positions, a graduate or higher level graduate degree that included 18 semester hours in the field of speech pathology with approved clinical practice.(Transcripts Required)
Licensure: GS-12 and above- Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice Speech-Language Pathology in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. (License Required)
In addition to meeting the basic requirements of employment listed above, the following criteria must be met to qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level.
Grade Requirements
GS-12:
Licensure: Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice Speech-Language Pathology in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. (License Required)
Experience: You must possess one (1) year of professional experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) directly related to the position being filled and fully meet the GS-12 grade level Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's).

Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies.
Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures sufficient to perform clinical services independently.
Ability to conduct assessments, provide treatment interventions, and provide consultation to other health care professionals.
Knowledge of instrumentation used in speech-language pathology.
Knowledge of principles and techniques used in alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) systems, diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia, and cognitive-communication disorders.
Knowledge of principles and techniques used in voice disorders including alaryngeal and trach/ventilator-dependent patients.
Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary speech-language pathology practice.
Preferred Experience:
A minimum of 3 years experience in medical speech pathology preferred. Background in an acute care and rehab settings, interest working in geriatric care, and experience with program development is desired.

Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must comply with any Employee Health requirements as a condition of employment. In the performance of duties, the incumbent may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA-vehicles.
