This position is located in the Calibration and Repair Lab of the National Animal Disease Center (NADC) for the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Ames, IA. In this position, you will provide preventative maintenance and repair services to all entities of the National Centers for Animal Health (NCAH), as well as other support units.

Duties

Conducts preventative and repair maintenance on a variety of laboratory equipment such as controls, lights, and outlets for research and support programs. Maintains working stock and accurate inventory of repair parts and maintenance supplies for laboratory equipment. Operates a wide variety of test equipment including test meters, voltmeters, ammeters, watt meters, oscilloscope, signal generators, transistor analyzers and ohmmeters. Works with voltage systems through 480VAC and control systems operating on low and line voltages. Trouble shoots for set-up of laboratory equipment including hardware and software installation. Supports electricians to install and maintain electrical systems in the Center facilities as assigned. Supports HVAC mechanics to trouble shoot and maintain central PC-based BAS (building automation system), including sensor and hardware testing and calibration, and graphic programming.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 01/12/2024. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Electronics Mechanic, without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Applicants who do not meet the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT will not be given further consideration. Working Conditions Work is usually performed inside heated buildings, but the incumbent may be required to work on equipment located outside of buildings and on top of roofs. The incumbent is subject to fumes from welding, soldering and sparks, gases and toxic fumes. They will be subject to potential injury and continuous exposure to hazards of cuts, bruises, noise, vibrations, burns, dust, dirt, and danger from flying chips when using powered and hand tools. Subject to falling when working on ladders and scaffolds. Changes to clothing will be provided by Center while at work duty station. May be required to shower prior to reporting to duty station and/or in accordance with entrance/exit safety protocols for specific area of the Center. Restrictions of facial hair may be imposed by supervisor for proper use of personal protective equipment. Required to wear a full faced respirator when working in biological control setting. May be called in nights and weekends to make or assist in emergency repairs or operations. Physical Effort Works in crawl spaces and on ladder or scaffolding. Work requires close hand and eye coordination, walking, prolonged periods of standing on concrete floors, climbing, bending, reaching, and working in cramped positions or crowded areas. May be required to lift equipment or material weighing up to 50 pounds.
