About the Position: This position is located within the McDonald Army Health Center Primary Care Optometry Department. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized. Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

Duties

Assists in the preliminary examination of patients prior to their evaluation by the optometrist. The technician provides recommendation to improve service, correct problems, and improve reliability of procedures. Interviews each patient eliciting a limited general medical and eye history, and reviews medical records for additional history required for the vision evaluation. Must accurately set-up, program, run and document results from a Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer as directed by the provider. Identifies when the patient is having a problem during the test, stops the test or change setting, calms the patient, reviews the test results, and begins the test from the beginning if needed. Performs a wide variety of administrative support functions for the clinic. Respectfully receives/greets incoming patients, answers the telephone and refers calls as needed. Ensures the maintenance of adequate supplies of spectacle repair parts, prescription slips, examination forms, and other consumable items used by the clinic. Performs cleaning and other first echelon maintenance on the various items of ophthalmic equipment maintained in the clinic.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
  • This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing any two or more of the following; working in an optometry office conducting visual evaluations, screenings, testing and triage of patients; conducting maintenance and repair on examination equipment; assisting patients with the selection and/or fitting of eye wear; use of an automated system to schedule patients for appointments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
