About the Position: Serves as a Lock and Dam Equipment Mechanic responsible for the preventive maintenance, repair, and occasional operation of the various mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical equipment.

Duties

Responsible for the preventive maintenance, repair, and occasional operation of the various mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical equipment. Participates in repairs and major overhauls to equipment and systems including such things as the following: electric driven hydraulic motors/pumps with hydraulic pressures up to 3000 pounds; lock gates and valve operating mechanisms, etc. Installs new emptying/filling valve operating machinery; repairs structural features of the lock gates above water by removing damaged sections with a cutting torch and replacing damaged new sections by welding or bolting; and threading. Installs, maintains, repairs, overhauls diesel and gasoline internal combustion marine engines and other related equipment aboard floating plant, such as main propulsion/hoisting engines, propelling units, generators, and air compressors. Threads and installs new pipes and fittings in high and low pressure oil, air, and water systems.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must obtain IMTS Lock and Dam Operator certification within one year of appointment.
  • Load Handling Equipment certification is required for this position and must be obtained within one year of appointment.
  • This position meets the criteria for random drug testing under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE Pamphlet 600-1-3.
  • Individual Districts may determine this position to be Mission Essential based on site-specific conditions.
  • Incumbent may be required to have an American Red Cross Standard First Aid card, CPR, and/or AED in good standing and/or wear a prescribed uniform based on site specific requirements.
  • Incumbent may also be required to have a valid state driver’s license based on job-related, site- specific requirements.
  • Employees are required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory.
  • This position requires the employee to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. May occasionally lift and carry items weighing over 50 pounds. This position requires a preemployment physical.

At a minimum, your level of experience must show that you have performed common tasks including installation, repair, and maintenance of lock or lock and dam machinery and/or equipment of mechanical or electrical types, concrete work, etc. Performed continual and special operational or functional checks on machinery to avoid untimely or dangerous equipment breakdown and identified development of unsafe conditions. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element)Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.Knowledge of MaterialsTechnical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Trouble Shooting Physical Effort: Work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing and crouching. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. May occasionally lift and carry items weighing over 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands and feet, and also of legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment in confined areas such as manholes, enclosed switchgear structures, or on overhead structures. Climbs ladders and poles. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside, subject to changing climatic conditions, loud noises, prolonged standing, falling, water hazards, drowning, cuts and bruises. Works in cramped places and is exposed to dirt, grease, fumes, and dust; works around heavy construction machinery, with and around power shop equipment. Occasionally will work behind bulkheads or in tunnels below water level.
