The incumbent serves as a museum technician located at a museum facility in a National Park Service organization. The purpose of the position is to perform a full range of complex curatorial support work in a museum.
Technician work is typically associated with and supportive of a professional field; work may involve substantial elements of the work of the professional field, but requires less than full knowledge of the field involved.
Duties
The employee will work during annually recurring periods of employment for the position and unit as described below. The period will last as least six (6) months but total less than twelve (12) months per calendar year. When operational needs and/or funds are not available, the employee will be placed in non-pay status. Placement in non-pay status will not be on a sporadic, occasional, or unplanned basis.
This position is seasonal in nature and does not provide for employment on a year-round basis. I accept this appointment with a seasonal work schedule with the following conditions: ? You will be placed in a pay status and can expect to work a minimum of 25 pay periods not to exceed a maximum of 25 pay periods. ? You will be placed in a non-pay status from approximately 02/11/2024 to 02/24/2024 unless other work exists that can be assigned to you during this period. Though my non-pay time may be reduced, I will still be placed in non-pay status for a minimum of 1 pay period in accordance with NPS policy. Additional work must be in concurrence with applicable regulations and policies.
The Museum Technician performs tasks associated with collections management under the supervision of the park curator. Steamtown National Historic Site preserves and maintains one of the largest park collections in the National Park Service. Composed of nearly five million items, the collection includes historic objects, natural history specimens, archival documents, and archeological artifacts.
Major duties for the position include:
Conducting routine housekeeping tasks in the museum exhibits and collections storage areas according to the housekeeping plan. Providing daily and cyclical cleaning and monitoring of artifacts in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Monitoring the environment of the museum exhibits and collection storage areas and keeping records on temperature, relative humidity, light exposure, and pests.
Creating and maintaining museum records, including accession, deaccession, loan, inventory and cataloging records, in accordance with NPS standards.
Conducting Annual Inventory of Museum Property.
Handling, cleaning, labeling, and housing objects in the collection according to NPS standards. Performing routine cleaning, stabilization, or preservation of artifacts. Making recommendations for the care of museum collections.
Cleaning and monitoring public areas, exhibits, and storage areas. Assisting with accessing, repairing, and troubleshooting collections display fixtures in the exhibits. Reporting object deterioration, damage, movement, or theft to the park curator.
Assisting with responses to visitor inquiries, internal and external research requests, and the development of interpretive content related to the park collections.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/02/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
To qualify for this position, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: collection management; registration and cataloging of museum materials and records; research archives; using basic preservation, restoration, or conservation methods to manage collections of museum material. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full academic year of related graduate level education

Superior Academic Achievement with major study in a related field. Related fields of study include: art, art history, history, museum studies, library science, or other courses closely related to the position to be filled. The education must have been obtained at an accredited college or university. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a Combination of Education and Experience as described above.

Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
