The San Diego Healthcare System is currently recruiting for a Food Service Worker (Diet Aide) to work in Nutrition and Food Services. The primary function of this position is to utilize food service software to generate patient reports and individualize patient meal tickets based on diet orders, patient preferences and menu selections.
Duties
Duties include, but not limited to:
Final review of diet trays before delivery to patients, preparation and serving of specialized foods and beverages.
Limited food preparation to assist cooks, dishwashing and cleaning tasks.
Are responsible for processing all diet information communicated to the service via food service software, telephone or diet information slips according to the Diet Office Workflow.
Reports are generated for production staff.
Conduct patient phone calls and visitations to take menu selections and answer questions.
Report process and quality issues to management, and potential patient nutrition concerns to a Registered Dietitian.
Perform other customer service-related tasks as assigned and must always maintain a friendly and cheerful demeanor, reflecting the culture of the healing NFS promotes.
May provide patients with basic information about modified diets, such as explaining what items are allowed on which diet orders.
Support tray line operations by reviewing the menu with tray line employees and ensuring stations are set up adequately for meal service operation.
Assemble patient meal trays and conduct the final check of trays assembled by lower grade workers.
Check for completeness, correct placement, neatness, correct food temperature and verify that food items on the tray are appropriate for the prescribed diet and that special requests have been honored.
May be required to fill in for other tray line positions if needed.
Prepare bulk supplemental feedings and deliver to assigned units.
Follow directions in assembling, counting, measuring, weighing or mixing ingredients for basic formulas and other supplemental feedings.
Take inventories, replace expired bulk items and labels, and distribute individual supplemental feedings to appropriate patients or nursing stations.
Diet Aides are up the units for patient meal selections and/or delivery of food items, they are to follow hand hygiene practices according to NFS and medical center infection control policies.
Subject to internal and external hand hygiene audits throughout the medical center.
May also be assigned to cold food and/or nourishment preparation, where it is necessary to review production reports to determine the various supplements, thickened beverages, specialty tube feedings, cold meals, sandwiches, salads, and/or desserts to prepare.
Organize and process all cold ingredients and combine ingredients according to recipes.
Diet Aides may need to use portion control scales and measuring devices to apportion individual items according to standardized recipes.
Arithmetic may be required in converting from the metric system to the U. S. standard system or from the U.S. standard system to the metric system.
After meal service, Diet Aides may be assigned to make certain all food and soiled pans have been returned to the appropriate area.
All staff are responsible for cleanliness of work areas.
Diet Aide may need to set up and operate a mechanical dishwasher, including the continuous conveyor belt feeding dishwasher and
remove inspection doors, strainer pans, screens and spray arms for preventive maintenance and cleaning.
Clean assigned work areas including refrigerators and other equipment.
May be assigned to higher graded positions as needed for short periods of time including duties of higher-level supervisor (WS-4) during periods of leave and for training purposes.
Perform other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements: Diet Aides may be required, and must be physically able, to perform work involving frequent and recurring standing, walking, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. They may be required to push heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies and transport heavy objects and food service equipment. Work is subject to some pressure to complete assignments with close schedules. To minimize risks of work related injuries, Diet Aides should adhere to safe ergonomic work practices, including, bending of knees while lifting, utilizing appropriate protective equipment, and following established safety policies.
