The Motor Vehicle Operator position serves the Engineering Service Line, at the Tuscaloosa A Medical Center 679, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Tuscaloosa, AL.

Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Utilizes their knowledge of the area, the driver selects the safest, most direct, legal route to be followed. Serves as the back-up driver to the trash truck operators. Identifies alternative routes which may be used if an emergency should arise. Checks to make sure that the cargo is secured to prevent shifting from falling while in transit and to minimize the possibility of vehicle sway. Operates vehicles on interstate highways, winding roads and steep grades and manipulate the dual braking system to prevent accidents. Operates hydraulic lift gates for loading and offloading supplies and laundry. Inspects gates, doors, and latches before traveling to ensure shifting to excessive movement does not occur. Performs preventive maintenance inspections, make daily visual inspection of the assigned vehicles for safety and routine servicing, connections, tires, lights etc. Operates the following transportation vehicles: 2-ton flatbed truck, 2 ½ ton box truck. Serves as courier for medical equipment and supplies by operating up to a 2-ton capacity or 24,000 to 26,999 GVW with dual pull wheels, automatic or 5 speed manual transmissions and hydraulic lift tail gate on a requested basis. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 6:30am - 2:00pm DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Must have possession of a Class B CDL driver's license with passenger endorsement. (Please DO NOT submit your driver's license with your application materials.) A valid driver license is mandatory. You must complete any driver manual training that may be required by the location support facility required in order to drive a government vehicle. Your driver license will be verified at interview. (We cannot forward documents that contain pictures, therefore, Please DO NOT submit your driver's license with your application materials.) and ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. PHYSICAL EFFORTS: The Motor Vehicle Operator must be mentally alert and physically able to exert moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on tractors to hook up service lines, lower landing gear. Performing duties in a safe and competent manner while operating the vehicle utilizing great care and caution to perform his/her duties. The Motor Vehicle Operator uses rear view mirrors for backing a trailer into narrow and congested areas, constantly watching the location of the vehicle. Also, must be alert always watching for other traffic and pedestrians while backing up. The Motor Vehicle Operator must load and unload large package or other items being transported. Frequently lift's, pushes and pulls objects up to one hundred (100lbs) pounds. The Motor Vehicle Operator may be required to use physical exertion and with frequent stooping and bending. AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Motor Vehicle Operator drives in all kinds of traffic, day or night, and weather on open roads or in dense congested city areas and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds. The Motor Vehicle Operator makes local and out of town trips and occasionally works weekends. The Motor Vehicle Operator is subject to engine and road noises for long periods of time, hot and cold temperatures, slippery roadways due to rain, snow, ice, etc. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.
