This position is assigned to the Plant Operations Unit, under the direct supervision of the Supervisory Facility Operations Supervisor for the NWI Grand Island Medical Facility. The incumbent conducts various tasks in connection with maintenance, repair, and operation of the boiler plant and chiller plant.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to the following: Operates and maintains three (3) Fire-tube boilers of 200 horsepower and 6,900 pounds of steam per hour capacity each on natural gas and #2 fuel oil, blowing down boilers, water columns and gage glasses, testing electric fuel and water safety devices, starting and stopping fuel, feed water and transfer pumps, testing and maintaining proper balance of boiler water by use of chemicals and adjusting burners for proper combustion, test water to maintain chemical balance. Responsible for and maintains all equipment in the boiler plan, making repairs such as packing pumps and valves, replacing defective valves, pipes and fittings, replacing insulation, adjusting regulators and adjusting burners for proper combustion using either natural gas or #2 fuel oil. Incumbent must keep daily and monthly logs for all operations of the plant and reads or obtains readings throughout the plant. Responsible for the operation and repair of 3 350 Ton centrifugal water chillers, cooling towers and ancillary equipment. The incumbent reads and records data from pressure gauges, thermometers, flow meters and monitors the Johnson controls Engineering Control Center as to the status of the air conditioning system throughout the Medical Center. Start and stop air conditioning equipment as appropriate, checks operational status of A/C equipment, monitors readings of alarms, temperature, etc., and makes minor adjustments from the computer system. Tests samples of air conditioning system water and adds chemicals as prescribed for control of corrosion, scale build up, and bacteria growth. During days, nights, weekends, and Holidays, incumbent makes minor adjustments necessary to allow the A/C system to function appropriately as emergency calls are received from patient areas and occupied areas of the facility to include adjustments to valves and the turning on and off of the appropriate equipment until mechanics can make necessary repairs. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm to be discussed during interview Position Description Title/PD#: Utility Systems Operator/PD70326A Physical Requirements: Incumbent may install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair equipment or components from ladders, platforms and scaffolding and in cramped or hard to reach areas. This can require walking long distances, prolonged standing, stooping, bending, and climbing in uncomfortable or tiring positions. The working conditions vary with the environment. It may be inside or outside, and is generally dirty, dusty, greasy, and may be in inclement weather. Incumbent must be medically able to wear a respirator. The incumbent frequently lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. He/she occasionally may handle materials and equipment that weighs in excess of 70 lbs. The incumbent must be able to routinely fit into the mud and steam boiler drums.
