This position works in the Interventional Radiology section of Imaging Services at the VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS). The Lead Interventional Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the IR area, develops and maintains protocol manuals, is responsible for implementation, adherence to all safety practices and policies. Works closely with team members and clerical staff to assure quality control and patient satisfaction.
Duties
Duties include but not limited to:
Ability to perform peripheral and visceral angiography of the abdominal systems and extremities including renal, hepatic, mesenteric, aortic, femoral, etc.as well as neuroangiography including spine, head, and neck studies.
Performs routine administrative procedures for the purpose of maintaining accurate imaging records. Receives and interprets all radiology requests.
Inputs pertinent radiology information into computer. Schedules appointments, processes exam requests, and registers patient exams, cancels and case edits exams in the Radiology Information System (RIS).
Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results.
Explains examinations to be performed to patients so they understand the purpose of the study as well as any requirements of the patients, so they are thoroughly understood.
Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self.
VAPORHCS is a teaching institute which requires the technologist to assist/train radiologists, other technologists/technicians, students from affiliated institutions, and other health care professionals in x-ray equipment operation, DR/PACS usage and in diagnostic procedures and protocols. Respect and professional interaction with others are required at all times.
Courteously interacts with patients, visitors, medical staff, and other professionals on a daily basis, projecting a professional and helpful attitude, in person or by telephone, dealing with problem solving and quality issues.
Liaison between radiologists and requesting providers to ensure more complicated exams are correctly completed.
Rotates on call and is the subject matter expert in obtaining appropriate information and imaging of emergent exams after hours when limited staff is available.
Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
Ensures that adequate quantities of supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt, and inventory control. Assures that IR procedure rooms are stocked with necessary supplies always with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies.
Determines staffing requirements based on past, present, and future workload patterns and oversees the development of the weekly/monthly schedules.
Oversees the organization of staff work assignments, including lunch and break rotations.
Coordinates the repair and installation of Imaging equipment. Serves as the liaison between IR and Biomedical Engineering and repair contractors.
Quality Control: Manages QA/QC for all aspects of Interventional Radiology.
Additional duties as assigned within the scope of practice for Interventional Radiography.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.
Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
Grade Determinations: GS-10
Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
Assignments: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: The incumbent functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below. The incumbent provides a full range of general radiologic imaging exams, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated:
a. Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work.
b. Ability to resolve informal employee complaints.
c. *Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures.
d. Ability to perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations.
Preferred Experience: 5 years Interventional Radiology experience preferred.5 Years Interventional Radiology experience preferred.
5 Years Interventional Radiology experience preferred.
5 Years Interventional Radiology experience preferred.
