This position is located in the Prosthetics & Sensory Aids Service. The primary purpose of this position is to provide complete wheeled mobility services to inpatients and outpatients, which includes scooter, wheelchair, and recreational/sports adaptive equipment services assembly, modification, testing, repairing, troubleshooting, test, repair, and troubleshooting. Assists therapists with proper fitting and performs modifications to assure the device meets required prescription requirements.
Duties
Major Duties include but are not limited to:
Assembles, disassembles, troubleshoots, modifies, and repairs all equipment associated with wheelchairs (manual, mechanical or electrical), scooters, recreational/sports adaptive equipment, accessories, and battery charges.
Inspects equipment upon receipt to ensure all equipment and/or accessories are available to complete full assembly, based on prescription; assembles equipment; repairs wheelchairs not under warranty; and conducts inspections for those wheelchairs under warranty in order to assist for return to the factory for repair and/or replacement, and tests all equipment for function and safety.
Performs routine repairs to include tire, battery and upholstery changes.
Recommends replacement of wheeled mobility devices (manual, mechanical or electric) when repairs are not cost-effective or feasible.
Repairs and/or replaces assembled and non-assembled micro-switches, junction box assemblies, multi-control switches, short and long terminal panels, potentiometers, printed circuits, diodes, relay switches, and resistors.
Energizes, adjusts and tests new motorized wheelchairs before issuance to patients and performs necessary modifications for hand or chin controls, various supportive or restrictive devices such as straps, belts, and postural supports for maximum benefit to the patient in the operation of the motorized wheelchair.
Receives phone calls and interviews Veterans, caregivers, Veteran representatives and medical staff in order to provide appropriate assistance. In the event of an unfavorable decision, advises the Veteran of appellate rights.
Provides technical assistance to the physician or therapist in prescribing adjustments and modifications to existing wheelchairs/scooters and seating, as well as assisting in the development of new prescriptions.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Physical exertion for the position will include standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, reaching, lifting, and working in cramped positions. Must be able to lift up to 18 Kilograms (40 pounds) on occasion and there will be instances when supplies will need to be moved. Packing and unpacking boxes will be required as well as breaking down boxes for proper disposal. Frequently the incumbent is required to
assist in lifting wheeled mobility equipment from boxes or onto mounting blocks and/or transferring patient from a wheelchair to another chair and back again. Incumbent must seek assistance when lifting heavy objects in order to prevent injury.
Working Conditions: Work is performed inside well-lighted, well-ventilated area combined workroom/office setting in PTC: however, incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of electrical shock, burns, abrasions and cuts, with the risk of infection while working on contaminated chairs. There is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts such as level of noise in the assigned areas, high temperatures, or other adverse conditions, especially when performing duties in a warehouse setting which have adequate heating, lighting and ventilation. Work is predominately in a health care
environment with the possibility of coming into contact with ill and diseased patients, and/or contact with returned inventory from veterans with contagious disease, requiring practice of Universal Safety Precautions. Use of computer and peripherals, along with phone, fax, and other office equipment is required. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment as required.
