About the Position: Position is located at Naval Hospital Beaufort SC Work Hours are 0700-1530 Monday - Friday with occasional overtime. Working environment may be inside, outside, in confined spaces, on roofs, in mechanical rooms, sometimes dirty, sometimes hot or cold, on ladders or scaffolding.
Primary duties are keeping all HVAC systems on the installation up and running, keeping all positive and negative pressure areas operating within their parameters.

Duties
Installs and repairs a wide variety of new and existing systems.
Checks for proper flow of water through condenser water piping from water towers with various flow meters and gauges.
Checks for proper operation of equipment with various types of gauges, voltmeters, ampmeters, leak detectors and recharged systems.
Replaces old units with new units and makes repairs to all types of refrigeration, air conditioning, heating equipment and systems.
Makes repairs to air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Test and adjust pressure for efficient operation and correct temperatures.
Uses oxygen and acetylene welding torches.
Uses various types of instruments to check for proper temperatures of air conditioned spaces and buildings
Requirements
- Personnel must be certified as a Technician Type Universal in Refrigerant Processing as required by 40 CFR 82 Subpart F.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- A physical examination is required.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. This position requires a National Agency Check w/ Inquiries (NACI) background check.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination. A candidate selected to this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to annual seasonal influenza vaccination.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons in accordance with Army Regulation 40-562, Chapters 3 and 4.
- This position is inclement weather essential. This means that you must be willing to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position may require the incumbent to work overtime and be on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
- Must possess a current driver’s license
- Must provide the normal tools of the trade in order to accomplish assigned duties.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. I have the ability to perform the full range of air conditioning and refrigeration maintenance. I am skilled in installing, maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting, mechanical pneumatic and hydraulic precision equipment and control devices. I work on my own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection.
License/Certification required: Applicant be certified as a Technician Type Universal in Refrigerant Processing as required by 40 CFR 82 Subpart F.
Physical Efforts: Makes new installation and repairs from ladders, scaffolding, on top of buildings, and where the systems and equipment are in hard to reach places. Requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in cramped and tiring positions. Subjected to extreme temperature changes when required to work in freezers. Frequently handles, lifts, and carries
parts and machinery weighing 50 pounds or more.
Working Conditions: Spends about 95% of time out of the shop in other buildings and out of doors, at times in extreme weather conditions. Frequently exposed to freon and other chemicals used in air conditioning and refrigeration. Exposed to electrical and high voltage, moving machinery, dust, dirt, stains, fumes, cuts, and bruises.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
