Duties
Duty stations:
Point Reyes National Seashore (Point Reyes Stations, CA)
Redwood National and State Parks (Crescent City & Orick, CA)
Crater Lake National Park (Crater Lake, OR)
Selectee will work under a trail maintenance worker or other higher-graded position. The position will primarily be engaged in assisting with maintenance, repair, inspection and construction of a variety of trail related structures. Selectee will work as part of a team while carrying out maintenance duties. These duties include, but are not limited to, new construction, maintenance and repair of trail tread, brushing, water-bars, both wet and dry-stone retaining walls (historic and non-historic), rip-rap, bridges, and signs, as well as a variety of fence types including woven wire, barbed wire, and wooden split-rail. Selectee may be needed to work with packers and pack stock. Selectee will be required to accurately carry out detailed verbal or written instructions. Work may be performed in remote locations that require extended off-trail hikes of 8 miles or more over rough, rugged terrain in sometimes extreme weather conditions. Daytime summer temperatures in some locations can exceed 110°F. Environmental hazards to be found in some parks include rattlesnakes, ticks and copious stands of poison oak and the selectee may reasonably expect to be exposed to these hazards. Selectee may be required to spike camp.
Physical Demands: The work performed requires very heavy physical effort. The incumbent routinely lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries items weighing 50 pounds, and up to 150 pounds (or more) with assistance. Work will routinely require walking several miles per day over park trails to and from job sites.
Working Conditions: Almost all of the incumbent's work will be outside in all kinds of weather conditions. Work frequently involves the possibility of experiencing exposure to poisonous plants, bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes, sunburn, and insect bites. As a result, the employee must follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as hard hats, gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards and serious injuries. The incumbent must be able to live cooperatively in camp with other crew members, practice minimum impact camping and proper food storage for food preservation and protection from wildlife (e.g., bears, coyotes, etc.), and maintain good personal and camp hygiene.
Qualifications
Have the ability to do the work of a Laborer (Trials) without more than normal supervision. (Screen out) work experience includes the following tasks: perform work tasks on a crew or work group responsible for carrying out tasks in remote areas; use shovels, picks, rakes and saws to perform landscape or construction type work. Digging trenches, clearing water drainages and cutting & bucking timber. Must have ability lift and carry objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
