The purpose of this position is to perform routine radiographic examination procedures under the close supervision of a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist.

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Operates radiographic equipment to produce X-ray films of chest, joints, feet, hands, long bones of arms and legs, and other routine views (posterior and anterior) of other parts of the body. Working with outpatients or ambulatory patients, positions patients and determines and sets technical factors in accordance with standardized procedures and techniques. Perform with close supervision Fluoroscopic, OR, & portable examinations outside of their designated clinical times in order to prepare them for their duties upon completion of their 2 year certification program. Performs related clerical duties such as identifying film and recording pertinent data on charts, work requests, and records. Register patients into the computerized Radiology Information System. Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. Edits exam on completion. Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patient, staff and self. This is achieved by the use of lead aprons, lead gloves, lead shields, lead-lined walls and collimation. The technologist will be in compliance to radiation regulations and wear film badges. The incumbent must also be aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the medical center. The technologist captures computerized and digital radiographs, applies an algorithm, configures the image and verifies patient information before transmitting them to the picture archive system. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/05/2024. Basic Requirements Be a U.S. citizen or national, or be lawfully permitted to the U.S. as a permanent resident or otherwise authorized to be employed Accepted for enrollment or be enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) from a qualifying educational institution as defined in 5 CFR 362.102, on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled Position is related either to the student's academic field of study or the student's career interests unless the student is hired under a time-limited appointment Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled. You may qualify based on education as described below: GS-04: Be currently enrolled as a student and the completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study or associate's degree in a Diagnostic Radiologic Technology program Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of standing and walking. There is some bending and carrying of light items such as single exposure film cassettes. There is occasional lifting of moderately heavy items such as CR & DR imaging plates, and grids. Work Environment The work area is well lighted, heated and ventilated. Special safety precautions are used to reduce exposure to X-rays. These include using minimum possible current setting in the X-ray machine and never operating the machine except from behind a protective screen.
