This position is located within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Weather Service (NWS), Office of Water Prediction (OWP), with one vacancy located in Tuscaloosa, AL. Duties

As an IT Specialist, you will perform the following duties: Implement Linux cybersecurity procedures ensuring systems are operated and maintained in accordance with regulatory DOC and NOAA guidelines, along with in-house implemented policies and procedures. Facilitate and coordinate the gathering, analysis and preservation of evidence used in addressing cybersecurity violations. Install, configure, and maintain Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) operating systems on physical and virtual platforms. Design, configure, and maintain complex applications based on customer specifications for all Linux platforms. Evaluate and recommend new tools, technologies, and methodologies specific to RHEL to enhance system performance and efficiency. Develop standard guidelines for the use and acquisition of Linux based software systems. Implement and test security measures to protect data, software, and hardware. Monitor and optimize system performance, identifying performance bottlenecks and proposing solutions. Participate and contribute to work on projects requiring strong interpersonal, group and customer-service related skills. Coordinate with other Linux team members on system security projects using industry best practices on Red Hat operating systems. Coordinate and/or monitor development efforts and schedules. Track and execute Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&Ms) and security changes through the Linux Team Lead, Information System Security Officer, and the IT Supervisor.

Qualifications

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify at the GS-12: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: Applying knowledge of Red Hat system administration and information systems security standards and methods; Contributing to solutions pertaining to IT issues; and Assisting team members on system security projects utilizing regulations and procedures. -AND- Applicants must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the following four competencies: 1. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. 2. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. 3. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. 4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
