This position is located in the Police Service at Fort Harrison VA Medical Center in Fort Harrison, MT. The Locksmith is responsible for repairing, overhauling, modifying, testing, and installing a variety of locking devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes, vaults, and other secured locations; and for the manufacturing and duplication of keys (brass/electronic) and the keying placing/changing of combinations of locking mechanisms.
Duties
The major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Providing technical assistance and guidance to remote customer locations and to lower graded/less experienced locksmithing personnel.
Working collaboratively with police service's Physical Security Specialist to make sure all key plans are compliant with regulations impacted by the physical security program.
Performing the full range of work in the installation, repair, maintenance, and modification of a wide variety of commercial locking devices with varying makes and models found in doors, desks, safes, vaults, compartments, mobile equipment, electronic access control systems and secured areas.
Providing expert advice and recommendations to management on the most appropriate locks/systems for specific security requirements.
Designing and installing master key system, locks and integrated locking systems to meet special security requirements and management needs.
Troubleshooting to determine malfunctioning components and repairs by reworking existing parts based on knowledge of internal structure plus the operating characteristics of a wide range of models and of their working interrelationship with related components.
Determining precise locations and angles for drilling without harming the contents or causing irrevocable damage to the locking mechanisms or containers.
Examining all locks worked on for evidence of attempted neutralization and, if found, taking the steps necessary to decertify the lock and/or container.
Installing new parts as needed and fabricates repair items such as locking bolts and special screws.
Performing semi-annual key control inventories to ensure the key plan integrity is maintained to promote a highly successful physical security program within the facility or health care system, In conjunction with the Physical Security Specialist, service leadership and others identified.
Performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The work requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling for prolonged periods as well as working in cramped and awkward positions. Incumbent is required to lift items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds. The work is normally performed in a well-lighted, heated, and ventilated area. Occasionally work is done outside in inclement weather or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, and serious burns. Travel facilities assigned to offsite facilities logistically separated from the medical center is a regular occurrence.
