You will serve as a GAS DETECTION MONITOR in the TEMPORARY SERVICES SHOP (CODE 990), PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTEMENT (CODE 900) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will determine ventilation requirements of safe atmospheric conditions during hazardous evolutions. You will inspect spaces for the presence of flammable, combustible, toxic residues, blisters or scale which may trap hazardous substances which may become dangerous upon an application of heat or other agent. You will perform inspections with regards to safety fpr dry-dock or afloat ship. You will halt work operations when imminent danger is detected and exercise authority to evacuate personnel.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: RELIABILITY AND DEPENDABILITY Ability to demonstrate knowledge of hot work procedures and characteristics of combustible and flammable liquids, flashpoints, lower explosive limits, upper explosive limits, explosive range, fire triangle, basic fire chemistry, and confined space hazards. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the operation, calibration, limitations, application, and meaning of various gas testing instruments and interpretation of readings obtained by test equipment. Ability to communicate verbally, written, and automated in order to complete tags of atmospheric conditions and gas monitoring reports. identifying methods for testing hazardous atmospheres, residues, and materials; using knowledge of characteristics of gases, vapors, fumes, mists and dusts to identify hazards in enclosed, confined, restricted access and other spaces. Ability to display knowledge of confine space casualty situations and potential to recognize and apply the appropriate corrective or mitigating action in an elevated situation, maintain records and logs as required by higher authority; assist in testing for flammable, explosive, toxic, and asphyxiation hazards; check ceiling levels.
