THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 5 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a SUPERVISORY FIREFIGHTER (TITLE 5), Position Description Number T6307000 and is part of the IL 182 AW, National Guard.

Duties

As a SUPERVISORY FIREFIGHTER (TITLE 5), GS-0081-9, you will serve as Station Chief responsible for oversight and direction of the day-to-day operations of a fire station with two or more firefighting crews (including a Crew Chief and assigned crew) who drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, fight airfield and structural fires, perform crash and rescue operations, and assist in reducing and/or eliminating potential fire hazards. Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list: As the Station Chief, provide immediate oversight and direction of day-to-day operations at a fire station for an assigned shift. Supervise two or more crews, each including a Crew Chief and three or more firefighters, at least on Driver-Operator, and one piece of motorized firefighting equipment in firefighting and crash-rescue operations. Plan and assign work to be accomplished by subordinates based on priorities and deadlines, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments, and the capabilities of employees. Direct the operation of firefighting vehicles such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and crash-rescue trucks. Direct crew(s) to the scene of the fire following a redetermined route or selecting an alternate when necessary. Supervise positioning of firefighting vehicle(s) considering factors such as wind direction, rescue, sources of water, hazards from falling structures, and location of armament on aircraft. Supervise the performance of crash-rescue and firefighting duties at airfields handling complex aircraft (e.g. fighters, bombers, cargo, passenger). Maintain constant awareness of the frequent changes in cockpit design, ordinance placement, and cabin layouts to determine how they affect the difficulty of rescue and firefighting. Direct the application of water through turrets, extended waterways, and handlines to cool weapons and ammunitions during rescue, and operation or deactivation of specialized mechanisms and systems such as hatch or canopy release mechanisms, ejection seat mechanisms, or oxygen supply systems. Supervise the performance of structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities which may include research and/or large industrial complexes; hazardous materials (HAZMAT) containment and control duties; and/or Basic Life Support duties. Supervise firefighters in performing Basic Life Support and/or HAZMAT technician containment and control duties. Assist in the development of special protective services for structures imposing extreme hazards.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: GS-09 Level - MUST possess specialized experience which includes 24 months experience in one or more of the following areas: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade. (2) Rescue operations. (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards. (4) Operation of fire communications equipment. (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents. (6) Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention (7) Firefighting and fire prevention theory and techniques; (8) Fixed and mobile firefighting equipment operation. (9) Planning, directing, or carrying out fire protection and prevention programs and operations and/or (10) Performing emergency medical services. SPECIALIZED SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE: MUST possess experience in managing the function of the work to be performed and experience which includes leading, directing and assigning work of personnel. MUST be certified by the DoD Firefighter Certification System as the following. Submit certificates with application! Fire Officer II (includes Fire Officer I) Fire Instructor I Fire Inspector I Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I and II) HAZMAT Incident Commander (includes HAZMAT Awareness and HAZMAT Operations) CERTIFICATES: Individuals must be DoD Certified at the appropriate level before being eligible to permanently fill Firefighter position(s); applicant(s) may be hired without having all DoD certification levels. If you are found qualified without all DoD certifications, you will be brought on-board as an Indefinite appointment. Upon certification as a DoD Firefighter, you may be non-competitively converted to permanent tenure. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
