This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Shortage Category and/or Critical Need Positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: The Summer Hire program is from May thru August 2024, will need to be available to start by May 24, 2024. Management may fill multiple vacancies at each location.
Applicants applying for Yankton, SD will have their duty station set as St. Helena, NE.
Duties
Patrol project lands, guard against unsafe and unsanitary conditions, trespassing, fire hazards, vandalism, thefts, control traffic, and enforce rules and regulations.
Hand out maps, pamphlets, and copies of rules and regulations
Answer questions about fishing, hunting, and campsite locations.
Develop and present campfire programs, dam tours, nature walks, amphitheater programs, and other outdoor activities for the visiting public.
Keep historical records, files and items, and maintains ranger library
Conduct a program to identify and control the overuse and abuse of project lands and facilities.
Identify erosion problems and plan and implement soil protection projects.
Improve fisheries through active involvement in various habitat projects.
Utilize management tools to store, compile, and transmit data related to recreation and resources management.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a state issued driver’s license.
- This position may require you to wear a prescribed uniform while in a duty status.
- May be required to work nights and/or weekends depending on the needs of the project to which the employee is assigned.
- Incumbent may be required to work in adverse weather conditions.
- Must obtain a US Army Corps of Engineers Motorboat Operator’s License upon employment.
Qualifications
This is an open-continuous announcement. Referral lists may be requested to fill vacant positions throughout the life of the announcement. Position may be filled as a temporary appointment NTE 1 year. Temporary appointments may be extended up to a maximum of 18 months. A current permanent Army employee is not eligible for return placement under a new appointment.

Minimum Qualifications for GS-01: Current High School Student
General Experience for GS-02: Six months of general experience which includes experience in administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public.

Education: High school graduation (or equivalent).
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 6. Then divide your total credit hours of education by the total number of credit hours required for graduation as set by your high school. Add the two percentages.
General and Specialized Experience for GS-03: Six months of general experience which includes experience in administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public; AND three months specialized experience which includes patrolling public lands such as parks and historical/cultural sites.

Education: One year of education above the high school level with six semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 9. Then divide your semester hours of education by 30. Add the two percentages.
General and Specialized Experience for GS-04: Six months of general experience which includes administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public; AND six months specialized experience which includes recreation activities and patrolling public lands such as parks and historical/cultural sites.

Education: Two years of education above the high school level with twelve semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
Specialized Experience for GS-05: One year of specialized experience which includes experience involving coordination of recreation activities, patrolling project lands such as parks and historical/cultural sites or developing outdoor recreation activities.

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with twenty-four semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.
