This position is located in El Malpais National Monument, in the Division of Resources Stewardship and Sciences.
Duties
Major Duties of this position include:
Applies standardized scientific principles and techniques to assist in the inventorying and monitoring of cave resources and assist in the execution of approved protection plans for caves within El Malpais National Monument.
Assists in conducting caving inventory and monitoring activities that include mapping, surveying, and explorations of new cave passages.
Performs data entry for cave survey and enters other inventory data into digital databases and a GIS system as appropriate.
Learns and maintains technical skills to support the Monument's Search and Rescue (SAR) team and assists the Natural Resources Branch Chief in the instruction for both employees and outside groups in vertical rescue skills and vertical caving skills using single-rope techniques.
Assists in the execution of bat population studies and estimations, cave monitoring transects, and archeological inventories associated with caves.
Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
Selective Factors: Applicants must meet ALL of the following to qualify:
Vertical Caving Experience: Possess vertical caving experience including single rope technique incorporating rebelays, traverses, and redirects to enter and exit vertical caves.

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work in the fields of astronomy, geophysics, physics, hydrology, and geology, assisting with natural resources research projects; compiling and analyzing scientific data into for physical sciences research or natural resource-based studies or reports; operating complex sampling, monitoring, and laboratory equipment; collecting and analyzing environmental monitoring data such as water quality and quantity, atmospheric chemistry or air quality; and setting-up and managing remote environmental monitoring equipment such as weather stations and water-quality instruments, or using computer programs such as databases to compile, store, retrieve, analyze and report resource management data. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents.

EDUCATION: successful completion of full year of graduate education in an accredited educational institution (18 semester hour or 27 quarter hours) directly related to this position in an appropriate field of physical science, such as geology, geoscience, geophysics, earth science, environmental science, hydrology or other directly related fields. YOU MUST PROVIDE TRANSCRIPTS.

Successful completion of a combination of directly related education and GS-06 or equivalent specialized experience described above which would qualify me for this position. For example, I have 6 months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirements for this position and grade level) combined with 6 months (9 semester hours) of graduate education, as outlined above (50% of the education required to qualify), directly related to this position. YOU MUST PROVIDE TRANSCRIPTS.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
