Job opening: Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic

Salary: $26 - 31 per hour

About the Position: The Anniston Army Depot is located in Anniston, Alabama in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain chain halfway between Atlanta, GA and Birmingham, AL just off Interstate 20. The Depot is the largest employer in Calhoun County with approximately 4000 employees.

Duties

Perform final repair, overhaul, and modification of a variety of combat and tactical vehicles such as tanks, tank retrievers, missile launcher and carriers, personal carriers, and amphibians. Perform final tune up and repair to vehicles making precision fittings and adjustments to clearances which are close and difficult to attain. Utilize a variety of diagnostic and test equipment to determine causes of failure. Receive verbal instructions, work orders, or inspection reports outlining the deficiencies and repairs to be accomplished. Use voltmeters, micrometers, torque wrenches, drill presses, and other hand tools common to the trade. Diagnose defects and determines techniques to be used in the repair, rebuild, and modification of a variety of combat and tactical vehicles.

Disassemble, repair, rebuild and reassemble combat and tactical vehicles; Determine serviceability of assemblies and subassemblies of the vehicles and its related equipment. Remove major assemblies and/or systems from the vehicle and return to specialized shop area for disassembly rebuild and/or repair. Modify a variety of miscellaneous components and accessories for combat and tactical vehicles. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Trouble ShootingUse of Measuring Instruments PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Incumbent is required to stand, stoop and work in cramped positions, on top of and beneath vehicles. Frequently lifts 15-25 pounds and occasionally lift in excess of 45 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is usually performed in a shop that is moderately heated, lighted, and ventilated. The floor is concrete which is fatigue producing from long periods of standing and stooping. Incumbent is exposed to disagreeable fumes from exhaust of engines, minor cuts and bruises from working in close places and hazards of moving vehicles in and around the shop area. The work is of a heavy, dirty nature and is performed in areas where the noise is disagreeable making it extremely difficult to talk and be able to hear and understand instructions, etc. Ensures that hazardous materials/waste within work area are handled/processed within operating guidelines. Guidance for the proper handling of hazardous materials/waste is obtained through formal training efforts and specific guidance issued by the supervisor. Ensures that storage drums, and other containers housing hazardous materials/waste are properly labeled and secured at all times. Reports any deficiencies to the supervisor. Properly disposes of hazardous materials/waste used/generated at work site. Immediately notifies supervisor of any accident or spill and initiates response actions as directed by supervisor. Since exposure to hazardous materials/waste is possible, wears protective clothing and equipment (e.g., rubber boots, coveralls, goggles, aprons, gloves, respirator, etc.) as situations warrant.
