The VAMC in Louisville, KY is recruiting for a Physician Assistant (Consultation & Liaison and Inpatient Psychiatry) to serve as full-time. This position is accountable to the Mental Health Service, for assuring the most effective delivery of state-of-the-art care by meeting or exceeding compliance standards.
Duties
The Consultation & Liaison and Inpatient Psychiatry Consultant/Provider performs general psychiatric assessment, consultation, and treatment in a multi-disciplinary setting. The provider works closely with his/her/their colleagues to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art mental health care consulting in the Emergency Department, providing direct care on the inpatient psychiatric service, and serving as a back-up to the mental health consultant to other inpatient hospital services. Tact and courtesy are expected when interacting with patients and staff. The provider is a key participant in implementing the principles of the recovery model on the inpatient unit and in consulting with other hospital services. The provider works under direction from the Chief of Mental Health, the Mental Health Acute Care Section Chief, and the Medical Director of Mental Health. Routine work is performed with a minimum of supervision. The provider must perform duties on his/her/their own initiative within the appropriate scope of practice. The provider acts in a professional manner at all times.
CLINICAL DUTIES:
Provides psychiatric consultation services in the Emergency Department, including writing orders and admitting patients to inpatient psychiatry as indicated.
Provides treatment for general mental disorders in the inpatient setting.
Coordinates transfers and direct admissions (when indicated) from other hospitals and services, ensuring continuity of appropriate levels of care and integration of care between other services and programs within the medical center.
Provides consultation and assistance in the event of behavioral emergencies throughout the medical center.
Functions as part of a collaborative multi-disciplinary treatment team participating in associated team meetings and tasks.
Obtains and documents comprehensive medical history and physical examinations.
Provides medical care for assigned patients including establishing diagnoses, formulating and implementing care plans, writing orders, and providing or arranging for follow-up care as indicated.
Delivers therapeutic and psychopharmacological interventions.
Conducts suicide risk assessments and safety planning.
Orders laboratory specimens, diagnostic studies, other special tests, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized Tomography (CT) scans, etc., and patient care supplies.
Orders ancillary services, such as, pharmacy, social services, physical medicine and rehabilitation therapies, prosthetic services, etc.
Orders VA specialty service consults and initiates requests for non-VA medical care and consults.
Carries out health promotion, disease prevention, and patient education activities.
Obtains prescription database reports, such as eKASPER, PDMP Query, etc.
Completes forms including insurance, FMLA, etc.
Evaluates patients for and writes orders for behavioral restraint and seclusion.
Evaluates patients for capacity for medical decision-making and makes recommendations to caregivers and staff on the disposition of patients with impairment of mental capacity.
Participates in legal process for involuntary hospitalization and treatment when indicated.
Assists in covering psychiatric consultation services to other inpatient services and psychiatric treatment for general mental disorders in the outpatient setting when coverage is needed.
Completes documentation of patient care activities in the Computerized Patient Record System. Training regarding the use of the Computerized Record System will be provided by the VAMC. All Documentation shall be completed in accordance with VA policy and procedures.
Follows VA guidelines regarding infection control and safety.
Adheres to all quality management performance measures, including completion of tasks such as clinical reminders, encounters, and clinical pertinence reviews as directed.
Provides clinical supervision to trainees of the same discipline when indicated.
May engage in a collaborative agreement with a professional of another discipline to provide clinical supervision if/when appropriate and indicated.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Physician Assistant Basic Requirements
Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~
Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
