The duty station is the Dredge Goetz, wherever it is located.

Duties

Operates a motorboat in conducting before dredging soundings of rivers or in connection with marking dredge cuts for the Dredge and for after dredging soundings. Maintains a constant rate of speed on definite ranges between shorelines, regardless of fast or slow current. Holds boat within narrow limits in eddies and fast water. Steers boat alongside moving plant or craft, and is constantly alert to avoid damaging the boat by contact with other craft, wing dams, snags, etc. Transports personnel, supplies and equipment to and from site of operations. Helps load and unload supplies and equipment. Helps assist the Deck Crew with placement of buoys, pipeline floats and no wake signs. Responsible for keeping boat and engine clean and in operating condition. Makes minor repairs and adjustments to the engine and other parts of the vessel.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must obtain and maintain, at minimum, a US Coast Guard license for Apprentice Mate/Steersman (upon Western Rivers) within 12 months of entrance on duty.
  • Appointment to this position may be subject to a one year probationary period unless previously met through past appointments.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment physical examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • This is a seasonal position. Seasonal employment means annually recurring periods of work that typically last eight months each year but may vary depending upon the needs of management.
  • Shift work required.
  • This position may require work on weekends and holidays.
  • This position requires certification in Basic First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • This position requires the ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.)
  • This position meets the criteria for random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE ER 690-1-1218.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Small Craft Operator without more than normal supervision. Operating a motorboat (14'to 600' in length) for the purpose of conducting hydro graphic surveys of navigable rivers. Operating a motorboat or vessel in conducting before-dredging soundings of rivers or in connection with marking dredge cuts for the Dredge and for after dredging soundings. Operating a vessel within narrow limits in eddies and fast water. Making minor repairs and adjustments to the engine and other parts of the vessel. Filling boat with gas, water and oil. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
