This position(s) primary responsibilities are performing a wide range of standardized chemical tests and analyses in support of the laboratory mission.

As a Chemist (Analytical) your typical work assignments may include: Serving as a Chemist responsible for performing a wide range of chemical tests and analyses in support of the laboratory mission. Evaluating analytical chemistry procedures and technology for the analyses of illicit drug materials. Applying professional knowledge of physical, chemical and instrumental technics to perform chemical and instrumental analysis. Performing investigations, analysis, and interpretation of the composition, physical and chemical properties of substances. Collecting and interpreting scientific data such as newly gathered statistics, observations, instrument readings, measurements and specimens in terms of their scientific significance.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the Basic Requirement and Specialized Experience requirements as noted below. Qualification claims will be subject to verification. Basic Requirement Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics; OR Combination of education and experience: course work equivalent to a degree in a major as described in above paragraph; including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Specialized Experience In addition to the Basic Requirement, one year of specialized experience is required that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) or competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and is directly in or related to this position. You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience. Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GS-09 Level: Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-1320-07 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrate your ability in: 1) Reviewing and calibrating laboratory instruments, 2) Ordering and organizing laboratory equipment and supplies; 3) Assisting with the interpretation and analysis of scientific data results; 4) Applying of analytical chemical principles, theories and practices in a laboratory environment; OR Education: Two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree; OR Combination of Education and Experience:A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. GS-11 Level: Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-1320-09 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrate your ability in: 1) Consulting and assisting with the reviewing and calibrating of laboratory instruments; 2) Maintaining, ordering, organizing, reagent materials inventory, laboratory equipment, and supplies; 3) Providing guidance with the interpretation and analysis of scientific data results; 4) Interpreting, analyzing and writing scientific reports of findings; OR Education: Three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
