This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Navajo Region in Gallup, New Mexico to perform and coordinate hydrologic studies and interpret hydrologic conditions to define, analyze, and forecast. NOTE: TRAVEL AND RELOCATION EXPENSES WILL NOT BE AUTHORIZED. ANY RELOCATION EXPENSES ASSOCIATED WITH REPORTING FOR DUTY WILL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE SELECTED EMPLOYEE.

Duties

Serve as a project member for complete hydrologic investigations by planning, conducting, and reporting. Uses comprehensive process or computer models to conduct and simulate hydrologic analysis and inform operations. Provides current information on resource management and technical requirements. Provides technical advice and information on water resource problems of mutual concern. Performs complex tests to determine the chemical and/or biological components of water samples from a broad range of sources.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: (OPM Operating Manual, Qualification Standards for Professional and Scientific Positions and Individual Occupational Requirements for Hydrology Series, 1315).INDIVDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Basic Requirements: A. Degree: physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels. or B. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: In addition to meeting the basic entry level qualification requirements, applicants must have the following: GS-09: 1 year of specialized experience to at least the GS-7 grade level. Examples of qualifying specialized experience which involves using relational databases and related applications to maintain hydrologic data for conducting operational support and planning analyses; performs a range of standard tests to determine the chemical and/or biological components of water samples; plan and performs a wide range of data collection assignments; provide technical advice and information on water resource problems OR 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience. GS-11: 1 year of specialized experience to at least the GS-9 grade level Examples of qualifying specialized experience which involves to collect and evaluate hydrologic data; use comprehensive process or computer models to conduct and simulate hydrologic analysis; work on complex water issues of hydrology and related disciplines such as hydraulics, geology, geochemistry and the complexities of ground or surface water flow; works with State, local and/or tribal land managers to advise on water resources management practices consistent with Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Federal Land Management Policy Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience. The full performance level of this position is GS-11. One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education which shows the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
