You will serve as a HEALTH PHYSICIST in the Radiological Emergency Planning Division, Radiological Control Office, of PSNS and IMF.

Duties

You will prepare credible radiological emergency accident drill scenarios for use in evaluating preparedness of the Shipyard response to reactor accidents and radiological emergencies. You will prepare technical and administrative procedures for Shipyard response to reactor accidents and radiological emergencies. You will develop plans to coordinate the Shipyard resources to limit personnel and environmental hazards and to minimize ship and facility damage resulting from a radiological accident. You will assist other Naval installations in the preparation of radiological emergency response plans or special projects as well as preparing and reviewing new regulatory documents or procedures for NAVSEA. You will stay abreast of latest requirement sand innovations in emergency planning by review of technical papers and regulatory requirements as well as attending seminars and training sessions.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

For the GS-12: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: applying professional health physics concepts and principles to manage (e.g., plan, coordinate, evaluate) radiological emergency response functions (e.g., drills, training exercises; data analysis, identifying deficiencies, recommending corrective actions); and experience utilizing emergency management systems (e.g., Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I), Emergency Disaster Services (EDS), RadResponder, Quality Performance System (QPS), communications software) to ensure the protection of persons and their environment from exposure to ionizing radiation. For the GS-11: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: applying professional health physics concepts and principles to plan radiological emergency drill scenarios and analyzing data to ascertain preparedness for radiological emergencies in an industrial environment. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:
  • Successful completion of a bachelor's degree or higher in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus; or
  • A combination of education and experience with courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above.
In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:
For the GS-11:
  • Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or
  • Successful completion of three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, or
  • A combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience
