Duties
This position serves as a Park Ranger for the Color Country District.
Conducting patrols and monitoring visitor use activities in two National Conservation Areas (NCAs) and designated Wilderness areas.
Performing day to day operations and minor maintenance tasks at developed fee sites, dispersed camping sites, motorized and non-motorized trails and trailheads.
Advising visitors about safety, fire prevention, public land etiquette, and authorized uses of recreational facilities.
Developing formal and informal interpretative programs about resource values in two NCAs.
Coordinating and supporting volunteers and volunteer projects.
Using geo-spatial technology (GPS/GIS) to collect and manipulate data related to recreation facilities management.
Assisting with fee collection activities, maintaining fee accounting records, and submitting deposits.
Assisting with management of Special Recreation Permit program, monitoring competitive events and authorized permit activities.
Presenting a positive image of the BLM and conducting visitor contacts in a courteous, professional, and friendly manner.
Demonstrating general knowledge of agency policies and objectives related to the management of NCAs and other special designation areas.
Requirements

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Qualifying specialized experience includes: Working as a park guide, front country, backcountry, or Interpretive Park Ranger in a park, recreation, or conservation area. Experience in the implementation of policy related to the protection, conservation, or management of park, recreation, or conservation areas.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have four (4) years (120 semester hours) of education above high school, leading to a bachelor's degree in a related field of study.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.
To qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Qualifying specialized experience includes: Management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of primitive and developed recreation areas, wilderness areas, and conservation areas; experience conducting regulatory and permit compliance monitoring, and completing a variety of recreation related projects; performing pedestrian and vehicle patrols in front and back country areas; facilitating and organizing work projects for employees and volunteers; and speaking to groups.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.
Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads.
Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.
