The primary purpose of this position is to provide maintenance of the cyberspace base cable infrastructure to include trouble shooting and repair, communications cable splicing, LAN/WAN maintenance, ground-to-air antenna installation and maintenance, installation of Outside Plant/Inside Plant (OSP/ISP) cabling systems and quality assurance capability.
Duties
Performs maintenance on base owned communications cable, installations of OSP and ISP cable/wiring systems and may be appointed as government Quality Assurance Personnel (QAP) to monitor contractor performance and quality of installed communication systems to include fiber optics, copper core cable, voice and data premise wiring and modifications of maintenance work upon the various cable circuits and associated systems.
Provides for planning, analysis, design, development, testing, quality assurance, configuration, implementation, integration, maintenance, and/or administration of network systems including LANs, WANs, and MANs, Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), Internet/Intranet systems and premise wiring in support of voice and data requirements.
Uses test equipment to locate faults such as, but not limited to, opens, transpositions, shorts, crosses and grounds in cables and makes repairs as necessary.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Performs scheduled Preventive Maintenance Inspections (PMls) and unscheduled maintenance and repair on various type antennas (including but not limited to), UHF/VHF, Rotatable Log Periodic (RLP) and OMNI-directional antenna systems, to include compressors and air dehydrator systems.

- Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
- Will be required to posses a valid operator’s license in order to drive a motor vehicles to and from work sites and must possess certification to operate various pieces of heavy equipment to perform cabling responsibilities.
- May work with hazardous material such as asbestos or accumulated waste. Employee will be required to wear protective clothing and gear on these occasions.
- May be required to climb poles, towers and antennas by climbing, gaffing or extension ladder, without protective scaffolding on heights ranging up to 400'. Employee should not have a fear of heights.
- Works inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather and in areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy. May work in close quarters and/or confined spaces such as manholes or attics. Subject to electrical shock, cuts, and bruises.
- May be exposed to temperature extremes in test facilities, extremely high noise levels, and lead, radiation, chemicals, or carcinogens. Requires
employee to wear protective clothing such as steel toe shoes, gloves, safety straps and/or hard hats.
- Operates various motor vehicles and must use various heavy equipment such as tractors, backhoes, trenching equipment and various trucks up to 2 ½ ton.
- This position is eligible for situational telework only.
- Employee will be required to not have a fear of heights, nor be claustrophobic.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-2500, Wire Communications Equipment Installation And Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
