As a Biological Science Laboratory Technician in Media Preparation you will be responsible for accurate and efficient production of media for use in a complex laboratory testing procedures at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories.
Duties
The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity. The duties may include, but are not limited to:
Monitors inventory of glassware, chemicals and disposable supplies necessary to prepare media and reagents.
Receives request for media and reagents from a specially designed computer system.
Reviews the formula and procedures for making the requested media or reagent and resolves any obvious errors or omissions.
Orders and assembles necessary supplies, material, equipment and apparatus required for the preparation of media and reagents.
Performs quality assurance tests (pH determination, temperature determination, etc.) on in-process materials and final product.
Manages approved documents to maintain Master Files in support of Quality Management System.
Requirements

- Work is performed in a laboratory setting and is subjected to unpleasant odors, cuts, bruises, punctures, heat, steam, gases, dust, and high humidity.
- Duties require working with numerous chemicals with highly toxic properties (example; formaldehyde), some of the chemicals worked with have yet unknown properties.
- Use protective gear such as laboratory coats, safety aprons, and various types of gloves, safety glasses, goggles, fume hoods, and respirators may be required.
- Work in this area requires prolonged periods of standing, sitting, walking and manual dexterity and coordination in various stages of media preparation.
- Lifting of items up to 50 lbs. is occasionally necessary.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
FOR THE GS-05 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
Working as part of a team to plan, organize, or set priorities to effectively complete assignments.
Interacting with other team members through communication or consulting.
Participating in quality assurance activities and maintaining proper quality assurance records.
Reading, interpreting or applying written instructions.
OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-05 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
