The Lead Medical Support Assistant in the Patient Support Section of Health Administration Service in Lexington, KY. This assignment is at a two-divisional teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Kentucky (UK) Medical Center at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, Lexington, KY. Incumbent will normally work at one of the locations for the two divisions (Cooper Drive Division or Leestown Road Division), with a primary duty station located at the Leestown Road Division.

Duties

The incumbent performs duties related to the receipt, intake, and indexing of health and administrative information. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Conducting ongoing reviews to ensure quality of work; Ensuring accurate and timely scheduling of appointments; Providing guidance to employees to include changes in policies and procedures; Distributing and balancing workload; Creating and maintaining employee work schedules; Orienting and providing on-the-job training for new and current employees; Ensuring all training requirements are met; organizing the work structure of his/her assigned areas; and Acting as liaison between MSA and other employees in order to resolve day to day conflicts. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience and Education Experience. Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR Education. One year above high school; OR Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. 4) Certification. None required. 5) English Language Proficiency. MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-6 Lead Medical Support Assistant: Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level. Qualifying experience must be at a level comparable to Medical Support Assistant experience or an equivalent administrative clinical support role in a non-VA medical inpatient or outpatient setting. AND Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate all of the KSAs below: Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities in order to meet deadlines. Skill in communicating with individuals to obtain the desired effect, ensuring compliance with established policies and regulations. Ability to provide staff development and training. Ability to manage staffing requirements, manage priorities, and coordinate with staff in the unit in order to complete duties in an accurate and timely manner. This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrate an understanding of the impact of incomplete work. Ability to review and monitor data to ensure all reports are complete and accurate. Work is generally sedentary; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items.
