The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic will work in the Facilities Management Service at the Malcom Randall Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining, repairing, installing, and modifying complex air conditioning, heating, and ventilating (HVAC) equipment and systems.

Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to: Troubleshooting, diagnosing, replacing, repairing, and evaluating the HVAC systems and its subsystems and components by use of multimeters, logic diagrams, as-built electronic control drawings, electronic schematics, and manufacturer's literature. Constantly alert to analyzing a failure and defining the precise cause and distinct location of the failure in all subsystems. Performing maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, and repairs of domestic and commercial refrigeration equipment and systems such as walk-in coolers, refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, cascade refrigeration systems, ultra-lows freezers, computer room equipment i.e.: (UEBERT), water coolers, etc., and a variety of Canteen cafeteria and Nutrition and Food Service main kitchen equipment. Interpreting engineering drawings which combine electrical and electronic schematics, logic diagrams, and mechanical drawings in order to trace signal flow throughout the system while troubleshooting malfunctions of complex systems and subsystems. Utilizing principles and theories of air conditioning, refrigeration and pneumatic controls, such as the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws, the use of refrigerant tables; how to calculate air flow, and the pressure temperature characteristics for the different systems in order to locate and repair faulty equipment swiftly. Making judgements and decisions regarding technical procedures and techniques. Judging the impact of repairs, adjustments, etc., on related devices and equipment of systems serviced. Interpreting work requests, assignments, and priorities. Completing job and equipment maintenance records. Assembling lists of materials and supplies needed for assigned work and drafts purchase requests. Assessing needs and writing clear work descriptions and accurately accounts for time and materials used. Providing technical instruction, directing, and guiding lower grade or less experienced workers in skilled work methods and procedures when working together or receiving on-the-job training. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic/PD00053A Physical Requirements: Must be physically fit and have the ability to be on their feet for long periods of time. Frequently carrying and setting up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. Making repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts of systems are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, frequently stretching, bending, and kneeling long periods of time.
