This position is located within Environmental Management Services (EMS) of a Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Center. The primary purpose of this position is to exercise technical and administrative supervision over subordinate workers in supporting and performing task (e.g., environment of care, textile distribution and training) associated with EMS goals and objectives.

Duties

Some major duties include but are not limited to: The position is delegated responsibility for assigning staff for routine and non-routine duties on a daily and a project-by-project basis. Non-routine duties require that the position reorganize work schedules efficiently to ensure work is accomplished in a timely manner. The position is required to coordinate work with supervisors of other services within the positions are of jurisdiction so as not to interrupt patient care or other activities. The position is responsible for the cleaning of all patient areas, corridor spaces throughout Medical Center, Operating Rooms, and all other areas as assigned. The position is responsible for assuring the efficient and economical accomplishment of work assignments of subordinates within established policies and schedules set by higher levels of supervision. The position plans daily and weekly assignments, scheduling periodic work for areas of responsibility, taking into consideration the availability of personnel and equipment to meet established priorities. The incumbent trains staff and ensure that they are using the patient centered care principles in terms of customer service to patients, patient's family members and personnel. Provides on-the job training for subordinates as individual needs dictate. Due to the constant change in type of patients, provides proper on-the-job training to ensure the housekeeping duties are effectively accomplished. The position provides special direction to new employees to prepare them for individual assignments, procedures, and safety policies. The incumbent schedule regular meetings with staff to make them aware of new procedures or directives. The position keeps the supervisor informs as the condition of staff, unusual occurrences or matters that should be brought to the attention of their supervisor. Keeps subordinates abreast of proper methods, procedures and uses of equipment and supplies; control the use of supplies and equipment to affect cost control within the unit. The position may be assigned to conduct in-use testing of equipment and /or supplies, providing feedback regarding their observations. The incumbent ensures all safety regulations and procedures are observed and may on occasion be required to conduct training classes on specific safety issues. The position may supervise the daily distribution of uniforms and textiles to the designated areas and persons and ensures record keeping is timely and accurate. The incumbent approves leaves request for subordinates, counsel's employees, and recommends disciplinary action to a higher-level supervisor whenever non-compliance with policy warrants. The position makes formal appraisal of subordinates works performance and conduct. The position routinely inspects assigned areas to assure timely accomplishments of employee assignments, sanitation levels are maintained, equipment properly cared for and that associated housekeeping objectives are accomplished in an expedient and timely manner. The position is responsible for the quality inspection of assigned areas, recording discrepancies in cleanliness, needed maintenance repairs, broken or inadequately stored furnishings and equipment. Provides documented inspection reports and acts on unaccomplished work. The position is responsible for the removal of furniture in need of repair and/or replacement along with the initiation of an electronic work request. The incumbent is responsible for the review of procedures, methods and sequence of tasks performed by employees under their supervision. Work Schedule: Rotating shifts, weekends, holidays Position Description Title/PD#: Housekeeping Aid Supervisor/PD99911A Physical Requirements: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris. Working Conditions: Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Some work may be performed outdoors where there may be exposed to varying degrees of heat and cold as well as inclement weather. PPE may be required in some circumstance as exposure to possible contagious diseases, blood and bloody secretion are inherent to this position. Care is required to avoid serious injuries (i.e., broken bones) when working on ladders, or when using 30-100-pound power equipment or handling hazardous materials.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
