Serves as a Lead Medical Technician in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the VA Western Colorado Health Care System. The incumbent performs both routine and specialized processing as assigned in anatomic pathology. Performs work in a clinical laboratory where the majority of the work is in support of patient diagnosis and/or treatment.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Accepts and/or documents incoming patient specimens using the designated computer system (or backup system) as per established policies and procedures.
Processes specimens and selects appropriate procedures based on knowledge of the type of specimens, patient information, and resources available in the laboratory.
Incumbent ensures that all required bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports are completed in a timely manner
The incumbent assigns and distributes a balanced workload plan among employees to assure timely accomplishment of the assigned workload.
The incumbent tracks the status and progress of work in order to make day to day adjustments in accordance with established priorities.
Calibrates and maintains laboratory instrumentation and equipment at timely and/or established intervals to minimize break downs and delay of procedures.
Monitors quality control of testing systems as required.
Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and assay procedures.
Assists in training personnel and/or students in laboratory procedures and laboratory safety

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/10/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 1ne full year of graduate education.

Physical Requirements: The work requires extensive periods of standing and walking, regular and recurring bending, lifting (less than 40 pounds), stooping, and stretching.
