The Industrial Hygienist position is located in the Lebanon VA Medical Center's, Operation's Safety Department reporting to the Safety Manager. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating, developing, implementing, and sustainment of the Industrial Hygiene Program across the Lebanon VA Medical Center and Community Clinics.

Duties

Maintains a comprehensive and current library pertaining to industrial hygiene, as well as individual currency in the promulgation of new codes and regulations. Identifies opportunities for improvement through an ongoing effort of hazard identification, evaluation, solution implementation, and monitoring. Makes decisions and commitments relating to assigned programs which routinely do not typically require referral to higher management. Evaluates existing and proposed new work processes or materials, particularly in experimental operations, to assure incorporation of adequate measures for prevention of occupational disease hazards. Assists with performing ergonomic assessments existing and proposed new work processes to evaluate and make recommendations to alleviate ergonomic stressors. Establishes a program and protocols for physical screening of employees exposed to particular toxic materials or physical hazards, concentrating on specific health effects. Plans and coordinates the investigation of complaints related to alleged Occupational Safety Health Hazards. The Industrial Hygienist is authorized to take the necessary immediate action when hazardous conditions pose a threat of personal injury or danger to equipment or buildings. Plans and directs a health education program designed to education the Lebanon VA Medical Center personnel as to means of preventing occupational disease and their role in controlling hazards. Perform all duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Full-Time Employment: 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday - Friday Position Description Title/PD#: Industrial Hygienist/01651-0 Physical Requirements: This position may require regular and recurring physical exertion such as moderate periods walking, standing, crouching, bending, stooping, or stretching in performing regular and recurring activities, inspections, or to observe healthcare operations in treatment facilities. The work may also require the employee to carry sampling equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. BASIC REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH). *Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: GS-11 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Qualifying experience involves the recognition, evaluation, corrective actions, and elimination of environmental conditions in the workplace that causes sickness, impaired health, or illness. This experience must demonstrate a professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of industrial hygiene and closely related sciences such as physics and engineering controls. Such work must have involved experience in ALL of the following areas: The acquisition of quantitative and qualitative data. The measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical, and biological stresses. The analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers. The selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment. OR Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-11 level: Possess 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. OR Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-11 level: Possess a Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-11. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Analytical Reasoning Chemistry Hazardous Materials Health Risk Analysis Planning and Evaluating IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
