The successful candidate will support Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) in the Criminal Division by providing a wide variety of technical assistance services related to complex financial litigation actions and matters. Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for Financial Litigation activities. Typical work assignments will include: Examining, preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels; Proofreading and cite checking legal briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents; Obtaining necessary information from legal reference files, office records, and other sources; Assisting attorneys in conducting legal and factual research; Obtaining and analyzing financial information on debtors to determine present and future ability to pay; Communicating with debtors to present options for debt payment, answer questions, and explain procedures; Preparing payment plans upon review of debtor financial information; Assembling exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents; Producing a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifications

GS-07: To be eligible at the GS-07 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level. Specialized experience is defined as reviewing legal documents such as complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels for completeness of factual information; researching a variety of legal sources to obtain and/or verify information; using automated software to produce legal related reports, documents, correspondence and related materials; communicating with debtors regarding collection procedures and payment plans; and resolving less complex, recurring debt collection activities. GS-08: To be eligible at the GS-08 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level. Specialized experience is defined as preparing complaints, motions, subpoenas, orders, or other hearing and/or trial documents accurately and in proper format; verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents; conducting factual research on individuals and companies using legal and non-legal databases; participating in making determinations and recommendations on actions such as settlements and payment plans; and utilizing automated financial software to process and monitor debt collections. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
