This position is located in Tonto National Monument, in the Resource Management Division. Open to the first 30 applicants or until 01/09/2024 whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration.

Duties

Tonto National Monument was established to preserve, protect, and interpret two prehistoric cliff dwellings, other archaeological sites, and the natural resources of the Upper Sonoran ecosystem. The Monument is over 1120 acres of desert environment comprised of diverse plant and animals including many species of cacti, snakes, bees, scorpions, lizards, and tarantulas. The Monument ranges in elevation from 2300' to 4000' and temperatures in this high desert location may range from 30 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. This position is stationed at Roosevelt, AZ. This position serves as a cultural resource specialist for Tonto National Monument where archeological resources comprise a major part of the park story. The incumbent will make significant contributions to the resource management plan. Major duties for the position will include: Serving as an advisor to park management on cultural resources. Identifying, evaluating, and monitoring cultural resources, identifying potential threats, and making recommendations to management regarding status and mitigation of impacts (present and future). Representing the superintendent when working with others on archeological matters. Developing and maintain effective working relations with related groups and individuals, agencies, and the public. Attending management and professional conferences and other events for the purposes of exchanging information and advancing advocacy for park stewardship. Making significant contributions to the preparation of historic preservation documentation, compliance, and background materials for clearances, permits, licenses, etc., as required by Section 106 and Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), Archeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), NPS Management Policies, and cultural resources management guideline for planning and construction projects that involve cultural resources for all park undertakings.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/09/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. To qualify for this position, you must possess at least one of the following Individual Occupational Requirements by close of the announcement: Degree: Must have obtained the education described in A through C in this paragraph: A) Bachelor or higher degree that includes 3 semester hours each in the following 5 course areas: 1) History of archaeology; 2) Archaeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3) Regional archaeology, archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archaeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating and analytical techniques; 5) Archaeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. B) IN ADDITION, must have taken six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archaeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying. C) AND must have completed archaeological field school. -OR- Related Curriculum: I have a degree in a related curriculum: Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements stated in A above, including archaeological field school. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: I have a combination of education and experience (college-level education or training) that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. -OR- Experience: I have four years of archaeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archaeology. The work experience must have included archaeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archaeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archaeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archaeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archaeological project. - AND - To qualify for this position at the GS-9 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: planning, implementing and evaluating cultural resource studies and assessing the value and quality of investigative results, and evaluating the significance and proper management of archeological resources; providing recommendations to protect cultural resources from management activities or projects. You must include hours per week worked on your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Master's Degree or higher, or completion of all requirements for a Master or equivalent graduate degree. To be qualifying, graduate study must have been in archeology, anthropology, or other closely related field. The total education offered to meet this provision must have provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the work of this position. To receive credit, you should describe how their specific course work, research projects, dissertation, theses, etc. demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of this position (Eighteen semester hours or 27 quarter hours or the number of credit hours the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study is considered to be equal to one full year of graduate education).If you are using education to qualify, you must submit a copy of your college transcripts, including the bachelor's degree. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience. Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
