This position is in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Field Organization, Midwest Area (MWA), National Animal Disease Center (NADC) located in Ames, Iowa.
In this position, you will work in Microscopy Services in the histology laboratory which is a core facility serving the histology needs for the scientists at NADC assisting with conducting basic and applied research on selected diseases of economic importance to the U.S. livestock and poultry industries.
Duties
Initiates action to resolve or correct technical difficulties and results, or recommends resolution to supervisor.
Collects, prepares, evaluates and verifies samples and supporting records for the histology lab.
Maintains records and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources.
Keeps detailed records of experimental data.
Adapts, modifies or develops new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project.
Performs the full range of techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment such as Tissue Processor, Embedding Center, Microtome/Cryostat, Automated Stainer, Automated Coverslipper.
Maintains, calibrates and modifies complex/specialized equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.

GS-06:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-06 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a research project related to animals; summarizing research data for reports; and performing a range of microbiology or cell biology techniques using laboratory equipment.

Education: Successful completion of one full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology Histology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Chemistry, Virology, or Immunology.
OR
A qualifying combination of education and experience as described above.
