This position is located in the Research Support Services, Agricultural Research Service, Northeast Area in Beltsville, MD.
In this position, you will provide daily care of agricultural and small laboratory animals to ensure their well-being and safety, and to assure compliance with regulations and guidelines governing the use of each species in research.
Duties
Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies poultry samples and supporting records.
Adapts, modifies, or develops new techniques or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project related to poultry.
Maintains an appropriate recordkeeping system of all eggs during the hatching process and schedules all egg placements in incubators and transfers into hatchers.
Operates incubating and hatching equipment and adjusts as required.
Checks and maintains light, temperature, and ventilation control systems in all units which house animals.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
- Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
- Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

- Special Physical Requirements - Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds.
- Participation in the Occupational Health Surveillance Program is required.
- American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) training certification as an Assistant Laboratory Technician (ALAT) level is required within six months of starting the position.
- AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification and Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist (RLATG) Levels of certification are also desired but not required for this position.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a research project related to poultry; statistically analyzing or summarizing data; and maintaining equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.

Education: Successful completion of one full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Animal Science, Animal Nutrition, Biology, Agricultural Science, and Ethology.

A combination of education and experience as described above.
GS-08
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting an experiment or research project related to poultry; collecting, preparing, and evaluating animal samples; and preparing reports to summarize research progress and results.

Education: Successful completion of two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Animal Science, Animal Nutrition, Biology, Agricultural Science, and Ethology.

A combination of education and experience as described above.
