The primary purpose of this position, Painter WG-4102-09, is to perform the full range of painting, including surface preparation, blending and matching paints, and coating of various surfaces requiring fine finishes and decorative effects.
Duty Title: Painting Journeyman
Duties
Prepare various surfaces of interior and exterior components of buildings and other structures by mechanically and chemically removing old paint and rust, filling cracks, sanding, and applying fillers and base coats.
Mix, thin, blend, match, tint, and tone coating materials.
Apply coating materials using brushes, rollers, spray guns and other means of application.
Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment.
Use and maintain tools.

- Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is desired.
- May be required to assist other workers in various crafts to include training and/or guiding lower graded employees.
- Flight line Driving/Testing is required.
- May be required to participate in mobility exercises.
- Exposure to toxic paints, chemicals, or other hazards may require occupational health examinations.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4100 Painting and Paperhanging Family.. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision.

Physical Demand: The painter prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and in situations where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. The work may be at extreme heights (such as water towers or tall buildings). This requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, be strapped into swing stages, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Ability to lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds. Occasionally, may be required to handle materials and equipment that weigh 40 pounds and over. NOTE: THIS POSITION REQUIRES A PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL.
Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, with dirt, spray, and fumes usually present. The painter is sometimes required to prepare, treat, and finish surfaces outside in all types of weather. Protective equipment and clothing such as safety shoes, safety glasses or sun glasses, gloves, rain gear, hard hats, coveralls, respirators and other protective gear are required, which are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts and bruises; may occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
