This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Duties
As an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner), you will:
Perform applicant physical examinations and assists with applicant medical processing at the MEPS stations.
Communicate changes to the medical staff for input into the USMEPCOM-unique applicant database.
Recommend to Command physicians if a more detailed physical exam of problem areas is required.
Evaluate for injuries, deformities, defects, disorders, etc. of all systems including dental, psychiatric and behavioral disorders and conducts a standardized orthopedic-neurological examination.
Provide basic life support in emergency situations to stabilize applicants while waiting for outside emergency services.
Ensure the confidentiality of applicants is respected and that professionalism is maintained at all times in the medical department.
Review all tests, studies, consults, and medical documentation that return after the day of processing.
Perform physical inspections of previously qualified applicants to document their status for meeting standards at the time of actual enlistment on active duty and at any other time as required.
Conduct thorough medical record reviews using standard templates to identify specific conditions requiring further review.
Use an electronic health record to record all findings in an efficient manner.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires a National Agency Check with Written Inquiries (NACI) security verification.
- All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
- Occasionally may be required to work on Saturdays and/or shift work (work before 0600 or after 1800 hours).
- Incumbent must be familiar with computer peripherals and associated software as needed to accomplish the mission.
- Successful completion of applicable Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS Training is required in order to access the MHS GENESIS System within 30 days of on-boarding and/or as required.
- This position requires a pre-appointment physical.
- Applicant must be able to pass a color perception (vision) examination.
Qualifications
TERM APPOINTMENT INFORMATION:
This position is TERM not to exceed 13 months with provisions to extend, in up to one year increments, up to a maximum of eight years.
Current Army employees who accept a time-limited appointment (to include employees with personal competitive status) will be separated at the end of the time-limited appointment date if the Not-to-Exceed (NTE) date is not extended.
There is no provision to make this position permanent.

Basic Requirement for Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner):
Degree for Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Positions: A graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty (primary care) required by the position. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.
Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination and possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Additional License Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: Applicants for Advanced Practice Nurse must possess licensure or registration by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Experience: One or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes: Conducting physical and/or emotional assessments for physical screening examinations; Ordering and/or interpreting diagnostic tests (e.g. lab work); Diagnosing and/or treating acute and/or chronic conditions (e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, injuries, wound care, etc.); Recording and/or updating patient medical records. This definition of professional nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone - no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
