Duties

As a GS-5/7 Park Ranger, your duties and responsibilities will include: Providing information to visitors on points of interest, travel routes, historical and natural features, and park activities. Making educational presentations to interested groups or conducting interpretive program activities. Assisting in emergencies and cooperating with other law enforcement agencies to protect park visitors and resources. Maintaining rapport with affiliated agency contacts to ensure efficient implementation of procedures and processes. Performing inspections of fire prevention systems to determine if operational standards are met. Developing portions of seasonal work plans, cultural history resource management plans, and/or visitor use management plans. Conducting patrols of various areas to ensure regulatory and administrative compliance. Performing other related duties as assigned.

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, the HR Office must be able to determine that you meet the education and/or specialized experience requirement. *NOTE: All specialized experience must be clearly supported in your resume. Specialized Experience Requirements For the GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service, which includes: 1) Conducting patrols to check conditions at various areas; 2) Drafting reports, maps, and/or other related documents for higher level review; 3) Explaining rules and regulations to park visitors and/or providing information and advice on park activities and resources. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level in the Federal service (GS-04). For the GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service, which includes: 1) Advising visitors on matters concerning safety, fire prevention, and/or proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities; 2) Inspecting facilities and/or monitoring visitor activities to ensure compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to safety, parking, campfires, sanitation, noise levels, etc.; 3) Responding to emergency calls and taking action necessary to protect visitors and resources, resolve problems, and/or administer emergency first aid and other appropriate assistance. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level in the Federal service (GS-05). This vacancy announcement allows substituting education for experience to qualify at the GS-05 and GS-07 grade levels. Substituting Education for Experience Requirements For the GS-05: Completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of coursework in a related field of study. Related fields of study include: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, criminal justice, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. NOTE: You must upload a copy of your school transcript with your application. For the GS-07: Completion of 1 full year of graduate education in a field of study related to the occupation. Related fields of study include: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, archeology, cultural history, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, criminal justice, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Coursework in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position to be filled. One year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours. NOTE: You must upload a copy of your school transcript with your application. The Superior Academic Achievement provision is to be used to determine eligibility for applicable GS-07 level positions of persons who have completed (or expect to complete within 9 months) all the requirements for bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a qualifying grade point average (GPA), class standing, or honors society. Specific requirements for Superior Academic Achievement provision are: 1) Class Standing: Upper third of graduating class based on completed courses; or 2) Grade Point Average: must be 3.0 or higher as recorded on official transcript or as computed based on 4 years of education, or based on courses completed during the final full 2 years of academic curriculum; -OR- a GPA of 3.5 or higher based on average of courses completed in the specific major field of study; or 3) Honor Society Membership: Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society listed in the Association of College Honor Societies, Booklet of Information, and/or Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities (membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision). Degree must be directly related to the occupation. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Time-In-Grade: Current career or career-conditional employees of the Federal government, or former career or career-conditional employees, who have a break in service of less than one year, are required to meet the time-in-grade restriction of one year of Federal experience at the next lower-grade, with few exceptions outlined in 5 CFR 300.603(b). Applicants eligible under the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) are not required to meet time-in-grade restrictions in order to be considered. You must meet all Eligibility and Qualification requirements, including time-in-grade restrictions and any selective placement factors if applicable, by 01/03/2024.

Education

This vacancy announcement allows substituting education for experience at the GS-05 and GS-07 grade levels. You must submit a copy of college transcript(s) (unofficial copy is acceptable) to support claimed education if substituting education for experience. Transcripts must include the name of the college or university and date the degree was conferred. A typed list of courses, grades, semester/quarter hours, GPA, etc. will not be accepted. Non-submission may result in being rated as not qualified for the position. You may also combine specialized experience and education to meet the minimum qualifications for the GS-05 and the GS-07 grade levels.

You will be required to provide official college transcripts to verify educational qualifications, if selected. An official transcript must be sent directly from the University's Registrar's office and must be provided from the institution awarding the degree. Academic transcripts certified by notary publics are NOT official. Official transcripts must be submitted prior to reporting to work as a condition of employment. Failure to submit official transcripts may be grounds for dismissal or rescission of the job offer.

Accreditation: Only education from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education is acceptable to meet education requirements or to substitute for experience, if applicable. Foreign Education: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs.
