The Reusable Medical Devices (RMD) RN Educator/Coordinator provides leadership and assumes continuing responsibility for the development, implementation, coordination, maintenance, and evaluation of the RMD program. The RN Educator Coordinator will be responsible for developing programs for staff education and maintain appropriate records including electronic software programs for training and competencies of staff related to RMD Policies.
Duties
The Reusable Medical Devices (RMD) RN Educator/Coordinator is responsible for the development and revision of policies and procedures, RMD and equipment inspections and sterilization procedures according to the Manufacturer's Instructions for Use (MIFU). He/she collaborates with multiple disciplines in the assessment, planning, organization, implementation, and evaluation of the program including orientation, continuing education and in-service to the pertinent staff. Is a core member of the RMD Committee and collaborates with the Chief SPS, in the development and the ongoing assessment of a quality management program for RMD. He/she serves as the subject matter expert on RMD matters for multiple services and disciplines and serves as liaison between Nursing Service, SPS and Infection Control Service on RMD matters. The incumbent has knowledge in areas of patient care practices, asepsis, disinfection/sterilization, adult education, communication, and program administration. The role involves clinical., administrative, and educational components, which impact patients and healthcare personnel throughout the VA health care system. The incumbent ensures the practice of device cleaning/reprocessing is consistent with and VA and related external standards (AAIMI, AORN, etc.). Collaborates with Chief SPS on the evaluation of new RMD requests. The incumbent is responsible to interact administratively with all services that are impacted by RMD including but is not limited to Surgery, Subspecialties, Dental, ABHICU, POPC, MOPC and more. The RMD Educator Coordinator has knowledge of conducting and reporting quality assurance measures and risk management activities related to RMD processes, requirements, VHA directives and OIG. The RMD Coordinator has experience with Joint Commission (TJC), utilizes sound clinical judgement, organizational skills, and effective teaching ability. He/she takes a leadership role with interdisciplinary team members in facilitating a RMD program throughout VA Healthcare System providing guidance, direction, technical and general resources to employees and provides management oversight and coordinates activities of RMD.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Must be proficient in written and spoken English
Preferred Experience:
2 years of RN Experience, preferred.
Previous Experience managing/pre-cleaning or reprocessing critical or semi-critical Reusable Medical Devices (RMD), preferred.
Previous Experience as educator, preferred.
Proficient in spoken Spanish.
Previous experience managing Microsoft Programs (Excel, Word, Power Point)
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires walking including long distances, standing, stooping, sitting, lifting, moving, transporting, bending, crouching, reaching, fine manipulation, pulling, and pushing items occasionally weighting as much as 50 pounds. The work involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, i.e., working with risk or exposure to contagious diseases, radiation, or infections. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on operational needs. This position potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as this is a 24/7 hospital. Transferring RMD and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent who provides service in CBOC settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive to or from main facility. involves lifting, moving and transporting patients, assist with transferring patients from wheelchair to to stretcher or radiology suite table and vice versa. Also assist with transferring patients to wheelchairs and/or may need to escort a patient to other areas. This position involves exposure to blood borne pathogens, fine manipulation, standing, walking, bending, crouching and reaching patients. It requires dealing with the acutely ill, with patients who may display disturbed behaviors, and with stressful situations.Moving patients and weighing patients in excess of 50 kg. or more. Wearing of a respirator may be required at times in the performance of the duties of this position. When required to use respirator, employee cannot have facial hair or any condition that interferes with the face to face piece seal or valve function of the respirator.
