Duties

Constructs a variety of standard wood boxes, crates, various types of skids, cylinder cradles, and other containers according to dimensions, specifications, and other directives. Operates a variety of box making machinery in fabricating wooden boxes. Utilizes hand and power tools to fabricate a variety of standard containers. Operates cutting, creasing, and slotting machines to fabricate cartons and related items of fiberboard. Uses a forklift to unload lumber and transport compressed gas cylinders for disposal.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Wood Worker without more than normal supervision (SOE): Perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as receives general instructions in terms of type of item to be made, constructing boxes, crates, etc.; measures and saws materials to lengths that are needed; and distinguishes between different sizes and kinds of lumber, such as soft pine, plywood, etc. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Uses power and manual tools while performing repetitive, tiring work for long periods of time. Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and reaching is required. Sometimes works in cramped or awkward positions. Work requires continuous lifting, carrying, and using tools and materials up to 40 pounds unassisted, and heavier items with assistance from others or lifting devices such as forklifts. May be required to work from scaffolding or ladder at times. Working Conditions: Work is performed in a warehouse that may be hot, drafty, or cold. Occasionally works outside in prevailing weather conditions. Constantly exposed to noise and dust from power saws and other related equipment. Subject to cuts, bruises, scrapes, splinters, and muscle strain from flying wood chips, nails, fasteners, staples, etc. Required to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to, safety shoes, glasses or goggles, gloves, aprons, approved hearing protective devices, etc.
