This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Duties: The Assistant Chief Nurse Anesthetist will assume major administrative responsibility over all registered nurse anesthetists and anesthesia technicians. This position is expected to be 0.5 clinical to include on-call rotation. The scheduled shift will coordinate with the Chief CRNA to allow for extended clinical leadership coverage until 1900 for most of the scheduled work week. The Assistant Chief is directly responsible to the Chief, Nurse Anesthetist, and directly or indirectly supervises all CRNA & MIT staff. Responsibilities include assisting the Chief, CRNA in planning, developing, coordinating, directing, and evaluating the operational aspects of a large and complex CRNA team. The incumbent performs the duties of Chief, CRNA when the Chief is unavailable. Clinical Demonstrates current clinical practice and act as a consultant in nurse anesthesia practice. Attends Medical Center and community meetings, seminars, conferences, and represents a professional image of the Anesthesiology Service Line Designs/revises formal standards of practice to improve patient outcomes and health care delivery processes at the service, functional group, Medical Center, network, or community levels. Participates and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams in implementing and improving standards of practice. Acquires and maintains current knowledge in practice (assessments, therapies, procedures, and technology) to effectively meet program, service, functional area, or system performance. Addresses ethical issues that impact individual patients, families, peers, & functional groups in collaboration with service, interdisciplinary, and administrative staff. Responsible for maintaining competencies in all Reusable Medical Equipment (RME), technology, and Medical Center requirements. Administrative Communicate the mission, ethics, and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department. Function as a departmental resource while promoting team functioning and representing the organization in a positive and professional manner. Effectively and consistently communicate administrative directives to personnel and encourage interactive department meetings and discussions. Assist to perform management activities including interviewing, hiring and discipline. Interpret and enforces Human Resource Management policies in a consistent manner. Resolve personnel concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as necessary. Recognize and evaluate the strengths and weakness of self and staff while regularly coaching staff on their contribution to the mission of the agency and with their performance development. Help staff to understand the context of their work and how it relates to the work of others and the agency. Help schedule and adjust staffing, as appropriate, for fluctuations in workload. Delegate appropriately to subordinates to share responsibilities for efficient departmental operations. Monitor the quality of anesthesia care. Ensure retrospective, ongoing, and continuing evaluation of the quality of nurse anesthesia care rendered by nurse anesthetists anywhere in the facility using ongoing professional performance evaluations. Ensure retrospective, ongoing and continuing evaluation of the quality of performance by anesthesia technicians through use of performance evaluations. Provide education to staff on performance improvement. Attend department, organization and medical staff (as appropriate) committee meetings. Attend committee, quality and management meetings, as appropriate. Help develop and implement anesthesia specific policies and procedures in conjunction with the medical staff. Ensure Departmental documentation meets current standards and policies. Demonstrate the ability to formulate a budget and recommend needed anesthesia equipment to administration. Comply with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. Assume responsibilities of Chief CRNA in his/her absence.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Certification: On and after May 4, 1993, certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists is a requirement for employment. Nurse Anesthetists will maintain recertification by meeting the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetist's requirements as a condition of employment. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 4-5 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 3-4 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-7 Nurse Anesthetist Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires mostly periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients/residents who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on stakeholder needs.
