The position described is that of a Registered Nurse Implant Coordinator Located in Decatur (Atlanta), Georgia .

Duties

This position potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as there are many units that operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week or have special situations. The incumbent must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and varied ethnic backgrounds. Willing to work cooperatively as a member of a team in all assignments. The incumbent makes caring for the Veteran his/her priority while in the work setting and demonstrates customer service principles in all aspects of work. Self-motivated in the pursuit of meeting professional work standards. Basic Life Support (BLS) required for RNs in direct patient care positions. The Facility Implant Coordinator RN is accountable and responsible for possessing the knowledge and skills to: 1. Adapt modifications to policy and procedures as needed per National Directives, Memos, other regulations and input and changes from other departments as needed such as: Sterile Processing Service (SPS), Prosthetics, and Supply Chain Management. 2. Responsible for data maintenance, identification of incorrect documentation and implementing corrective action. 3. Train a variety of healthcare individuals in the performance of implant tracking procedures, pre-authorization, and in the reporting of concerns/issues promptly, accurately, and proficiently. 4. Evaluate implant activities to assess ongoing day-to-day compliance with established protocols and guidelines. Recommends policy/protocol changes to correct deficiencies and improve the program. 5. Create, apply, monitor, and evaluate the implant process and any related processes. He/she initiates continuous performance improvement projects, both within the program and/or the organization. 6. Identify, define, and resolve problems associated with unique or controversial aspects of the implant management program where not direct precedent exits. 7. Develop technical bulletins, procedures, training materials and other program materials, which ensure accreditation and compliance with all regulatory agencies concerning biologic and non biologic implants, including implementing corrective action when deficiencies are identified. 8. Initiate consults in CPRS to Prosthetics Department to reorder implants used for procedures in Peripheral Vascular, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Orthopedic, Urology, Plastics, Oral Surgery, Women's Health Clinic, ENT Clinic, Podiatry Clinic, Interventional Radiation, Dental, Cardiology and General Surgery services. 9. Responsible for informing the Surgical Nurse Manager (NM)/Chief of Surgery of major problems and decisions in these areas. 10. Performs periodic inspections of the using areas and initiates any corrective actions which may be necessary to ensure adequate stock and conditions of storage. 11. Assists Risk Management and Patient Safety by locating implants and potential affected patients using TrackCore related to recall and defective product notices. Assists to identify the appropriate staff (Surgeons, NM) of the recall notice. 12. Maintains inventory control or delegates duties/responsibilities to appropriate personnel. a. Storage Room Controls: i. Storage room is clean, neat, and orderly. Labels are accurate and marked appropriate and are not soiled or defaced. Area is free of dust, spilled liquids, etc. Cleaning must be documented weekly. 13. Ensures a system (manual or automated) is implemented for tracking all biological implants, from vendor or distributor to the recipient at implantation and that all necessary staff have access to local training on the system. 14. Coordinates all aspects of implant management by working with Supply Chain Management, Prosthetics, SPS, and all clinical areas using implants. 15. Ensures biological and non-biological implants are entered into the EHR by clinical service personnel upon implantation. 16. Reconciles implants used with VA-owned inventory and vendor consignment stock of list by ensuring that adequate stock is available, while accounting for items used ordered and identified in submitted consults. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: 3-5 years OR Nursing experience, 2-3 years experience with TrackCore Implant tracking system, Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Physical Requirements: Heavy Lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy Carrying (45 lbs and over); Straight Pulling (2-6 hours); Pushing (2-6 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (5-9 hours); Standing (4-8 hours); Kneeling (1-2 hours) Repeated bending (2-4 hours); Climbing, legs only (1-2 hours), Twisting (2-4 hours), Working closely with others. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.

Education

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
