The Social Worker, Program Coordinator oversees social work sections in Mental Health Triage and the Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (2B) at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison WI. The Mental Health Department serves over 9,000 Veterans per year throughout the Madison VAMC facility network and has a 14 bed locked inpatient psychiatric unit.

This position is in the Social Work Service (SWS) and oversees social work sections & staff in Mental Health Triage (Front Door) and the Acute Inpatient Psychiatric unit (2B). This is an onsite Monday-Friday position located at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI. The position includes program coordination, supervisory and clinical duties. Proportion of clinical work vs. administrative work will fluctuate depending on clinic needs, but incumbent will spend at least 25% of their time on administrative duties. The primary duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Oversee and monitor day-to-day operations of Mental Health Triage (Social Work) and the Acute Inpatient Psychiatric unit (social work services).
Supervise Mental Health Clinic Triage and 2B Acute Inpatient Psychiatric unit Social Work Service (SWS) staff. Provide staff training, education, clinical supervision and develop performance goals/standards/criteria, evaluate staff performance and complete all supervisory tasks related to performance appraisals.
Actively participates in program planning and development by advising the Program Manager of shifting trends with workload, workload characteristics, identifying the need for and making recommendations on program procedure changes based on work experiences, VA National Directives, and/or Joint Commission.
Monitors and evaluates the delivery of services by 2B and MHC Triage SWS staff, inclusive of quality documentation in the EH. Actively engaged in performance improvement activities and implements any needed systemic/protocol changes in collaboration with the Mental Health Social Work Program Manager.
Monitors overall workload levels and disseminates work proportionately. Report to the Mental Health Social Work Program Manager when resources are needed.
Provide social work services in the inpatient acute psychiatric unit (2B) and mental health triage/Front Door departments when indicated.
Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 7:30 am to 4:00 pm
Participation in a Saturday shift rotation (8:00AM-12:00PM) and/or evening shifts may be required depending on Veteran and clinic need.
Telework: When it meets the needs of the Social Work Service Department and/or Mental Health Service Department.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.
Experience and Education. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
(a) Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.
(b) Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program.
(c) Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.
(d) Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s).
(e) Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice.
