This position is located is with the Wind Erosion and Water Conservation Research Unit in Lubbock TX and will directly impact the Units mission to accomplish research objectives.

Duties

Independently selects and carries out measurements and analyses by applying established or modified methods; performs difficult nonstandard tests and assays. Maintains official laboratory notebooks recording the methods and procedures used, any modifications of methodology applied, and the results. Coordinates activities between research for preparation of soil samples for microbiological analyses used for soil health assessment. Participates in the preparation of data for scientific technical reports and manuscripts; analyzes test and analytical results according to established principles; and modifies methods to solve problems or make improvements.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Education: 0403 Microbiology - Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: GS-11: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. The specialized experience requirements for this position include: Maintaining official laboratory notebooks, recording methods and procedures used, any procedural modifications, observations, and results obtained; Experience preparing this date for scientific technical reports and manuscripts; and experience maintaining and calibrating complex laboratory instruments, e.g. analytical instrumentation including differential scanning calorimeter, bioanalyzer, and gas chromatograph. Time in grade: Current federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
