Duties

Great Basin NP - Baker, Nevada Lassen Volcanic NP- Manzanita Lake, California Maintenance Workers perform trade work assignments associated with the maintenance and repair of grounds, buildings, exterior structures and related fixtures and utilities. This includes the maintenance of items such as tables, signs, shelters, water systems, pumps, and equipment. Other duties may involve cleaning restrooms and comfort stations, collecting and removing trash from facilities, and performing routine grounds maintenance. A typical work assignment requires a general familiarity with the practices, equipment and tools used by the maintenance personnel in accomplishing their assigned duties. This includes operating, under close supervision, equipment and tools such as heavy trucks, forklifts, lawn mowers, power saws, drills, cutting torches. A general understanding of some of the common practices and simple tasks of carpentry, plumbing, painting and cement trades are required. Physical Demands: Work requires frequent bending, stooping, walking over rough and uneven terrain, standing, working in cramped positions and climbing. Work requires lifting and moving heavy items (i.e.- 50 pounds). Working Conditions: The incumbent will be working outdoors in extreme temperatures varying from +100 to near 10 F, and at elevations ranging from 1000 feet to 7,000 feet. Work may be in heavy rain, falling snow, and frigid conditions. Incumbent is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, fumes, oils, solvents and cold and dampness.

Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in the Office of Personnel Management Qualifications Handbook X-118C, must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the job elements listed below to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. You must meet the 2-point level on the screen out factor/element and an average of level 2 on all factors/elements listed. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT) Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair etc. Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring instruments. Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading). Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Knowledge of materials.
