Duties

Acts as principal industrial hygiene advisor and technical consultant to the Agency, directors, and commanders, supervisors, and employees. Formulates industrial hygiene policy program objectives and guidelines for approval by Agency Safety and Occupational Health Director. Serves as an Agency-level Radiation Protection Program Manager (RPM). Deals daily with the following types of hazards: particulates, laser systems, fuels and petroleum products, hazardous chemicals, and hazardous materials. Plans and conducts studies and surveys within the Agency requiring resolution of complex and unique industrial hygiene issues. Provides technical industrial hygiene consultation regarding a variety of issues, including, but not limited to, Program Management, Hearing Conservation, Permit-Required Confined Spaces, Respiratory Protection, and indoor air quality. Conducts required sampling and monitoring at a variety of workplaces, evaluates results, prepares reports, and presents outcomes. Manages all Industrial Hygienist functions within the occupational health software program. Assess employee occupational health exposures for potential enrollment into medical surveillance programs / medical monitoring.

Qualifications

To qualify for an Industrial Hygienist, your resume and supporting documentation must support: A. Basic Requirements: The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum. Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). B. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in, or related to, this position. To qualify for the NH-03 level, specialized experience must be at the NH-02 or GS-11 grade level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes: Interpreting Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and regulations. Providing advisory services to management officials on industrial hygiene principles and practices. Generating new occupational health programs for a serviced organization. Monitoring programs to ensure compliance with industrial hygiene regulations and laws.

Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
